There were times when people did not consider moving out of the country and attaining a citizenship of a foreign country as an option. • However, times are changing and more and more people have started migrating from one place to another and applying for citizenship of other countries where they wish to settle down. • If you wish to apply for the Portuguese citizenship then you probably know the merits of attaining it. • But if you are unaware of the benefits of the Portugal Nationality then here is a quick list to give you the major advantages of getting the Portugal citizenship.

You will be allowed to vote in the portable elections, • You will be allowed to apply for the Portuguese passport, • It would become easier for you to attain the citizenship of European Union and you will also be allowed to easily travel across the European Union countries. • You must surely be wondering, under what conditions can a person apply for the Portuguese nationality? • There are three conditions/ categories under which you can apply for the Portuguese nationality. • One, you will have to prove that your ancestors were a part of any territory that was colonized by Portugal.

Two, if you marry an individual who is a native of Portugal then you will be considered eligible to apply for the Portuguese citizenship. • And three, you will have to prove successful permanent residence of 5 years in Portugal. • Regardless of the category you choose to apply from, you will need a lawyer who will guide you through the various stages of the process and will also represent anyone who wishes to attain Portuguese naturalisation. • Hiring a lawyer will work in your favour because the authorities of Portugal tend to over delay any requests because of the large number of applications they receive each year but a lawyer can help you in getting your work done at the earliest.

If you are applying for such an important countries citizenship then you will definitely need some documents and therefore, here is a list of all the necessary documents which are required to apply for the Portuguese citizenship. • 1. Proof of identification, • 2. Proof of actual address (you will have to provide the address of permanent residence if you are applying under the third category), • 3. Birth certificate, • 4. A document claiming that you do not have any criminal record in the recent history and • 5. a document claiming that you have sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language.

  7. Note:- all the documents should be authentic and if, in case, there found to be a mock then you will be held responsible and the Portugal government will have the right to take any sort of a legal action which can include either a penal action or a sentence of imprisonment in extreme cases.
