With the AARP’s findings that 75 percent of adults aged 50+ intend to stay in their own homes, a pressing concern for families and caregivers is how to maintain the delicate balance between independence and personal safety. Advancements in remote monitoring and personal emergency response systems (PERS) are making that possible. As a result, they’re changing the face of elder care and telehealth for seniors. Additional devices would monitor activity and trigger external alarms if the individual didn’t return to bed within a set period of time. Along with being reliable, this system had to be versatile enough to work in any home-based environment. Beyond that, it had to provide remote monitoring services with enough detail to prevent false alarms and respond rapidly to actual emergencies. Using off-the-shelf IoT products and consumer-grade smart home appliances, WellAware assembled the hardware for what would become its Sleep Sound Solution. But one challenge remained: How could these disparate components be integrated into a single connected senior care solution with the necessary reliability and flexibility?
