TheZeroHungerChallenge,launchedintheyear2015bytheUnitedNationsas partofits SustainabilityDevelopmentGoals(SDGs).Thegoalsetaimstoensurethatevery individualhas access toadequatenutritiontocurbmalnourishmentandassociatedproblems. As one oftheworld’slargestagriculturalcountries,Indiaproduces enoughfoodtofeedits populationbutstill faces theissueofwidespreadhunger.Thecountryishome to 25%ofthe world’s hungrypopulation,whichhas beenacontinuingcauseofconcern.Thishasledtoissues suchas stuntedgrowthamongstchildren,inabilitytoleverageeducation,limitedlabor productivity,andprevailingpoverty. India has been on a mission to eradicate the rampant issue of malnourishment and starvation within the country for several decades. The Government has launched multiple schemes and programs toimprovethenutritionalstatusandfoodsecurityacross thecountry: Themid-daymealscheme:Thisis aschoollunchprogramthataimstoprovidechildren attendinggovernment-aidedandNon-aidedschoolswithhot, nutritiousmealsonceaday. Itwaslaunchedtocurbchildmalnourishmentandhunger.Theprogramhasbeen successful in reducingclassroomhungerandimprovingtheeffectivenessofprimary education. AntyodayaAnnaRozgarYojana:This20-year-oldschemewaslaunchedbythe GovernmentofIndiatoprovidesubsidizedfoodtolakhsof low-incomefamilies. Individualsresidingbelowthepovertylineareallowedtopurchaseessentialssuchas wheat,foodgrains,andriceathighlysubsidizedrates.Themiddaymeal scheme continues tosupportseveralhouseholdsacross thenation. 3.NationalFoodSecurityAct(NFSA):TheActlaunchedin2013isbeingimplementedin allthe StatesandUnionTerritoriesofIndiatoimprovenationwidenutritionalstatus. Underthe Act,upto75%ofthe ruralpopulationand50% oftheurbanpopulationare

  2. eligibletoreceivesubsidizedfood grainsundertheTargeted PublicDistribution System. Specialprovisions have beenmadefor pregnantwomen,lactatingwomen,andchildrenbetweentheagesof6monthsand14 years.ThesegroupsareentitledtoreceivefreenutritiousmealsthroughIntegratedChild DevelopmentServices(ICDS)centersorAnganwadiCentres. These efforts have pushed India towards the right path of mitigating the issue of starvation and malnourishment in the country. India’s missions strengthen the country’s battle to achieve food securityandnutritionandmoveclosertowardstheUN’sgoalofzerohunger.
