Introduction • Medical marijuana denotes the use of the whole, raw marijuana plant or its primary extracts for the treatment of certain medical ailments and other conditions. • It’s an annual plant, thought to have originated from Central Asia and has been contributing to the medical field since approximately 3,000 years. • Scientific name is Cannabis sativa and has many health benefits associated with its use. • Lawfully obtained medical marijuana contain similar ingredients as the ones used for pleasure by individuals.

  3. Ingredients • Cannabis plant contains more than 100 cannabinoids, as its biologically active compound. • THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol), constitute the two main chemicals that are of medical importance. • THC is most potent cannabinoids in marijuana that gives one a “high”. • The cannabinoid CBD does not make one “high”. • Both THC and CBD are found to be useful in the treatment of certain medical ailments.

  4. Mechanism • Cannabis contains around 80 different cannabinoids, mainly THC which triggers the body’s Cannabinoid receptors. • These receptors are present in brain and almost every organ in the body. • Experts are less aware about CBD's mechanism and believe it may work either in conjunction with THC or on its own, to cause an effect on the brain.

  6. Drugs • Dronabinol and Nabilone are the two FDA approved drugs that contain the ingredients also present in marijuana. • Dronabinol contains synthetic THC and is useful for the treatment of nausea from chemotherapy and immense weight loss problem of AIDs patients. • Nabilone is used for similar reasons, but contains a manmade chemical identical to THC.

  7. Types • There are several strains of marijuana but each of them do not produce the same effect on individuals. • Some strains have uplifting and euphoric properties and others cause calming and sedative effects. • Typically, strains with higher quantities of CBD are more potent as sedative while those with higher quantities of THC make people more conscious.

  8. Legal Medical Marijuana • In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana. • Currently almost half of U.S. States have legalized it. • Legal medical marijuana can be bought on your doctor's prescription from an authorized vendor known as a dispensary. • Some people may even legally cultivate their own medical marijuana.
