The sages have told eight types of means for the purification of body, mind, and life through yoga, which are called Ashtanga Yoga, they are as follows – Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi! Pranayama is an integral part of yoga and mention in the eight limbs of yoga. The sages of ancient India described some breathing exercises that connect the body and mind with spirit, called Pranayama. Pranayama is a Sanskrit word that alternatively translates as “extension of prana” (breath control or life force). The word is derived from two Sanskrit words: Prana meaning “breath or life force” and Yama meaning “controlling prana’.

  3. Holding and exhaling the breath slowly and deeply comes in the sequence of pranayama. With the inhalation, feel that life force, superiority is being drawn in through the breath, while exhaling feel that our vices, bad tendencies, bad thoughts are coming out with the inhalation. 5. Pranayama For Meditation Nadishodhan or Anulom Vilon Pranayama • In Pranayama also, Nadi Shodhana is considered to be the king of Pranayama. This is because Nadi Shodhana is effective pranayama that keeps the mind, body, and emotions right. The word ‘Nadi’ means ‘flow of energy and ‘shodan means ‘to purify’. Therefore it means the practice by which all the Nadis present in the body are purified. • In this pranayama, you breathe in through the left nostril, hold the breath and then slowly exhale through the right nostril.

  6. Bhastrika Pranayama • After this, inhale through the right nostril, hold your breath and slowly exhale through the left nostril. • In this way, do 5 to 10 times in the initial time, then gradually keep increasing it. This is such pranayama in which pure air is taken in and impure air is thrown out, making a sound like a blacksmith’s bellows. In Bhastrika pranayama, the breath has to be taken in and out quickly. It is also known as ‘Bellow’s Breath’.

  7. Sit in Sukhasana, Siddhasana, Padmasana, Vajrasana or meditative posture. • Fill the long breath through the nose into the lungs only, then exhale through the lungs only. • Overall, maintain the same pressure while inhaling and exhaling.

  8. Kapalbhati Pranayama • In Kapalbhati Pranayama, full attention is given to only laxative, that is, to forcefully exhale the breath. Do not try to fill the breath, but let the breath go in easily, the whole focus is on exhaling the breath. While doing this, naturally there is a contraction and expansion in the stomach and there is a special effect on Muladhara, Swadhisthana and Manipura Chakra. • Sit in Sukhasana, Siddhasana, Padmasana, Vajrasana and while exhaling the breath has to push the stomach inwards, in this only keep exhaling. • The breath will automatically go in between two breaths, do not inhale the breath intentionally.

  9. Bhramri Pranayama • Bhrmari is a Sanskrit word, which means bee. The sound produced at the back of the throat during Bhrmari pranayama practice resembles the humming tone of a bee, hence it is called Bhramari Pranayama. It calms the agitated mind hence it is a very effective breathing technique for people suffering from high blood pressure. • First of all, Sit in a comfortable place in a Padmasana and Sukhasana. • If you feel uncomfortable sitting, you can use a chair. • Take a deep breath in both nostrils. Put the thumbs of both hands inside the ear. And place the first two fingers (index finger) on the forehead and keep the other fingers on the closed eyes.

  10. Advantages To Meditate • Now, Keeping the mouth closed, while exhaling, chant Om, which will produce a Hmmmmm sound. Through meditation, one gets not only physical and mental peace but also spiritual and emotional peace. Let us know that meditation is a yogic process that is considered the eighth part of yoga.
