  1. 7 Ways to Treat Pigmentation on the Face Healthy skin adds an immense charm to our personality. Most people, especially women, are constantly battling to achieve a naturally glowing face. Working young girls, who aren’t able to devote much time to a skincare routine, often have problems like pimples, acne, pigmentation, and dark spots on their faces. While the first impulse is to cover the problem with makeup, it is only a temporary solution. A common problem that is faced by a lot of people in metro cities today is pigmentation. Dark spots or pigmentation on facecan be treated easily, but before we tell you how to do that, let’s first

  2. understand what exactly pigmentation is (also referred to as hyperpigmentation in medical terms). Pigmentation patches are a result of excess melanin production in the body. This can be caused by anything, from sun damage and acne scars to hormonal fluctuations. The most effective methods for treating pigmentation on the face With little effort and awareness, you can effectively treat pigmentation at home. Here is a list of the 7 most effective and easily implementable methods that can help you regain blemish-free bright skin with a radiant glow. 1. Face Acids This method works well for people with fair skin who have mild pigmentation on their faces. Face acids or skin acids help by exfoliating or shedding the top layer of the skin. Exfoliation removes the old skin cells and the new skin cells that take their place make the skin look smoother and even- toned. There are many OTC (over-the-counter) options for face acids available at beauty stores and drugstores, but it is always a good idea to get advice from an expert or dermatologist before you choose one. Ideally, you should seek out products with an acid content of less than 10%. Some of these options include hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic, malic, lactic, citric, tartaric acid, and kojic acid. There are highly effective actives like Aquasurge, which are formulated using hyaluronic acid, which fights pigmentation and also helps keep the skin hydrated. 2. Skin Lightening Creams & Serums If the pigmentation is in the form of flat spots such as melasma or age spots, lightening gels or creams prove effective in curing them. These creams work on discoloured patches for most skin types and are easily available as OTC products. The select ingredients in skin-lightening creams and gels help in decreasing pigmentation. They are an affordable option, but it may take some time for them to give you the desired results. You can apply them to the affected areas of your face once or twice a day to help lighten the pigmentation over time. Some select ingredients in lightening creams and gels include TrueGlow (a very effective formulation that is made up of glycerin water, hydrolyzed yeast extract, and select glycolipids), Saffron extract, Licorice extract, Mulberry root extract, Hydroquinone, N-acetylglucosamine, and Vitamin B-3 (niacinamide). Before using such products, always ensure that they are dermatologically tested and are free of any harmful chemicals such as parabens and mineral oils. 3. Retinoid Recently, retinoids have become extremely popular among women across India. Retinoids are Vitamin A-based derived compounds. Many of these compounds are used for treating skin conditions. Retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, are one of the oldest OTC options for treating facial pigmentation. Retinoids penetrate deep into the skin, and their small molecular structure allows them to treat the layers below the epidermis. You can get both the OTC and prescription formula for a retinoid. However, OTC products may not give you the desired result. In such a case, you must consult your dermatologist about prescription retinoid tretinoin (Retin-A). Retinol is one of the most popular retinoids that is being used by women for skin brightening and fighting acne. One must be careful in the use of retinoids such as retinol as there are a lot of myths and misinformation about these products-be aware of some of these myths here.

  3. 4. Chemical Peels Chemical peels use strong acid concentrations to reduce pigmentation by removing the epidermis. You can either use an over-the-counter product or see a dermatologist for a stronger prescription product. However, if you’re out in the sun for long hours, then a chemical peel may not be the ideal solution for you since it makes the skin extra sensitive to the sun. You can try chemical peels for melasma, age spots, sun damage, or to treat blotchy skin. 5. Dermatological Procedures You can go for dermatological procedures like laser peel therapy, intense pulse light (IPL) therapy, microdermabrasion, and dermabrasion. Targeted beams of light are used in a laser peel (resurfacing) treatment to reduce pigmentation. IPL therapy, also known as photo facial therapy, is a type of non- ablative (fractional) laser treatment that stimulates collagen growth within the dermis. You may need multiple IPL sessions for your overall pigmentation issues. Microdermabrasion works best on superficial scars. Dermabrasion is a process used to improve the skin texture and works well for problems such as acne scars, sun damage, and age spots. 6. Vitamin C Foods high in vitamin C, such as lemons, oranges, limes, and grapefruits, are natural bleaching agents that can help reduce pigmentation and dark spots. You can make a simple yet effective face mask with lemon juice and honey. Leave this mask on for 15 minutes on the face and then wash it off. Do not use lemon juice in its actual form, as it may cause dry patches on the skin due to its acidic nature. 7. Other home remedies include Several other natural products are easily found in our homes that can be used as a mask to reduce pigmentation slowly yet effectively. Turmeric, Aloe Vera, Onion Juice, Milk, Curd, Saffron, and Green Tea Extract can be used regularly. The natural glow that reflects from supple, blemish-free skin is something that can be easily achieved if we give a little love to our skin.
