  2. Foreign objects in the Ear - Introduction What are foreign objects in the ear? A foreign object in your ear is when you have something that's not usually in your ear. It's usually seen in kids, especially toddlers, but it can also affect adults.

  3. Foreign objects in the Ear – Objects get stuck What types of objects get stuck in the ear? • The majority of objects that enter the ear canal are put there by the earlobe. Common items that are placed in the ear canal include :- • Beads • Food • Paper • Cotton swabs • Insects • Rubber erasers • Small toys • Marbles, and shells.

  4. Foreign objects in the Ear – Signs and Symptoms Signs and Symptoms can include:- • Ear pain • Ear irritation • Ear discharge • A feeling of something in the ear • Loss of hearing

  5. Foreign objects in the Ear – Action to be taken If an object becomes lodged in the ear, follow these steps:- • Do not try to pull the foreign object out of your ear using a cotton swab or matchstick. You risk pushing the object further into your ear and damaging the delicate structures of your middle ear. • If possible, try to gently remove the object if it is clearly visible, soft and easy to grasp with tweezers. • Try using gravity and tilt your head to one side to try to pull it out. • If you're having trouble with an insect in your ear, try using oil. If it's an insect, tilt your head so the ear with the bug is up. Pour mineral, olive, or baby oil into your ear. It should be warm, but not hot. You can make it easier to get the oil in by straightening your ear canal. For adults, pull the earlobe back and up, and for kids, back and down. The bug should suffocate and come out in the oil. • Be careful not to use oil to get anything other than the bug out. Don't use this if the kid has ear tubes, or if there's any sign of a hole in the ear - pain, bleeding, or discharge. If all of these don't work, get medical help.

  6. Foreign objects in the Ear – When to see a doctor Call for emergency when:- • You can't remove the object or can only remove part of it • The object poses immediate danger. • There is bleeding from the ear. • There is impairment in hearing. • You're not comfortable removing a sharp object, such as a stud or broken glass. • Fluid is draining out from the ear.
