    1. CCE Clinton 4-H Portfolio “I want to apply for a 4-H award trip scholarship” Welcome to the 4-H training to help you apply for the award trip scholarships available each year. The process used to apply for these opportunities is through the 4-H Portfolio and Application. After completing this presentation you will feel more comfortable with the application process and how to excel during the process. Why should I apply? 3 Award Trips Members from Clinton County attend these trips by invitation only Award Trips include Washington DC, New York City, and Capital Days As with any application process, it does take some work to submit. You will find the outcome of this process to be very rewarding in the end. The Wonders of Washington trip is open to 4-Hers 15 years and older. A 4-day trip to the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD. Participants stay at the National 4-H Center, visit the Nation’s Capital and its famous historical and cultural landmarks. 4-Hers learn about federal government and their role as a United States citizen and meet their Congressman. The New York City trip is open to 4-Hers 15 years and older. A 4-day trip where participants observe some of the unique career opportunities available in New York City as well as experience some of the social and cultural aspects of the city. The Capital Days trip is open to 4-Hers 14 and older. A 2-day visit to the state capital to tour and learn about history and state government. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet with their state representatives. As with any application process, it does take some work to submit. Scholarships for 3 regional trips Agribusiness Career Conference STARR Career Explorations These trips are open to anyone to attend. 4-Hers who win scholarships for this trip have most of their expenses covered and arrangements made for trip chaperones. Anyone else who attend is responsible for providing their own transportation, chaperone, and covering all the expenses of the trip. The Agribusiness Career Conference (ABC Trip) is open to 4-Hers 14 years and older. This 2-day trip is a collaborative effort of Farm Bureau, Cobleskill College and Cornell Cooperative Extension. The Agri-Business Career (ABC) Conference introduces teens to a vast variety of opportunities available in the field of Agriculture. 4-H teens will visit farms, agricultural businesses, and industries in the Cobleskill area. The STARR leadership retreat is open to 4-Hers 13 years and older. This 3-day event provides an opportunity for teens to develop leadership and other skills to be the 'resource of choice' for help addressing issues at local and state levels, and learn to work in partnership with groups of adults to make ideas and vision become reality. Career Explorations is open to 4-Hers 13 years and older. A 3-day trip for participants to visit and work on Cornell’s campus, learning about various college programs and resources, exploring career opportunities, and interacting with campus faculty and 4-Hers across the state.     5. Who is eligible? Any Clinton County 4-H member can apply for trip scholarships who are 13 years old and up. (by January 1 of the current 4-H year) This program is developed for Clinton County 4-H members.     6. What is a Portfolio? A portfolio is a visual representation of your abilities, skills, capabilities, knowledge, qualities—it represents your potential. It is a physical collection of artifacts that provides evidence of your potential by demonstrating what you accomplished in the past

    7. Why a Portfolio? The purpose of a 4-H Portfolio is to help you review and reflect on your previous 4-H experiences recognize the skills and accomplishments you’ve acquired learn to market yourself as a result of these experiences

As you “Learn By Doing” during your 4-H activities, you gain knowledge and skills in your areas of interest Many of these skills are transferable Transferable skills can be used to help you reach other goals such as applying to college, getting a job, or winning a scholarship Identifying and documenting your skills with take time and thought, but the effort will be worth it

    10. Adult Participation The Award Trip Application and Portfolio must be completed by the 4-H member This includes filling out forms, writing the 4-H Story, etc Adults can help by guiding, explaining, helping to compile information, and proofreading

    11. Special Accommodations We will make accommodations for those members who cannot complete the Portfolio and Application in the usual format A note detailing the accommodation must be included with the application Any person, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, ancestry, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, or disability may enroll as a 4-H member.

Materials may be compiled in a binder, folder, or other organized fashion as long as it is neat and easy to read Tabs and divider pages may help separate sections and make it easier to read You can be creative in the presentation of your portfolio—it should be reflective of you and your experience in 4-H

    15. Requirements: Documentation Your portfolio should document your experience as well as explain it. Examples of documentation include: Certificates of achievement Drawings, newspaper clippings, etc Samples of agenda’s you’ve written, flyers you’ve made, etc Photographs (captioned) Other This documentation should be part of every section.

Public Presentations List the title and topic of any presentations you gave for 4-H List where presented Presentations could be given at club, county, regional, state, or national presentation or communications events. They may also be talks you gave to community organizations or county legislators, etc promoting 4-H or explaining your experience. For supporting evidence, you could submit pictures of your presentation, or ribbons or certificates earned.     20. Community Service Remember, this category is to document what you do for others within your community…individually or as a group. HELPING to do for others is the key…leadership for these events is good, also helping as a member is good, too! Citizenship and Community Service can be achieved individually or as a group.     21. 4-H Leadership Experiences Leadership means taking the lead in giving direction, planning, and organizing Effective leadership depends on help from others, but helping is a supportive role, not leadership Identify the things you have done in 4-H where you planned, organized, and gave direction, either with others or individually Use action words to describe your responsibilities: ex: conducted (rather than attended) The next section contains the Leadership Activities you have been a part of. It is important to merge similar activities together to effectively use the space that is available to you.     26. 4-H Story 1 page 4-H Story that summarizes and highlights how you have benefited from your 4-H experience. Could answer questions like: How have you benefited from 4-H? How will you share your experiences in 4-H? What impact will you be able to make as a result of your 4-H experience? The narrative is your opportunity to catch the evaluators with that exceptional moment in your 4-H career and let us know how it will help you make a difference. The 4-H Project Record Defining a 4-H Project A project is a planned series of learning activities/experiences that engage youth in the use of their heads and hands in ways that result in enhanced competencies, open hearts and better health.     30. Submission Process Make sure your Application and Portfolio are complete and signed Always keep a copy for yourself! All materials are due in the Extension Office by June 1st by 4:30 pm. Applications and Portfolios will be evaluated by the end of June Award recipients will be announced during Achievement Day Once your application has been submitted, the Family and Youth Program Committee will review the materials and select those who will be invited to attend an award trip or will be offered a trip scholarship. The recipients of the awards will be honored at Achievement Day.
