    3. Levels of Training (2) Certificate Programs Marketable skills in a short period of time Transferable skills to other programs of study Associate Degree Programs Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded an associate’s degree Commonly referred to as “Two-year Programs” Frequently takes longer than 2 years to complete

    4. Certificate Programs Require less than 2 years to complete “Marketable” – provides students with skills that they can take into the workplace and obtain employment “Transferable” – skills may transfer to other health science programs. Please refer to the blue sheet titled: “I am Interested in a Career in the Health Care Industry! Q: Where Do I Begin? A: Certificate Programs!”

    5. Certificate Programs Basic Nurse Assistant Coding Specialist Emergency Medical Services Massage Therapy - New Program! Medical Assistant Medical Transcription Phlebotomy Polysomnography

    6. Associate Degree Programs Health Information Technology Nursing Radiologic Technology Respiratory Therapy

    7. I know which Associate’s Degree Health Science Program I would like to enter! Top white box lists courses that a student would need to take for any of the associate degree programs. Purple box lists courses specific to each discipline.

    8. Applicant Statistics There were 943 total applicants for the fall 06 Health Science Programs. Of those 943, approximately 160 students were admitted to Health Science Programs. Nursing had 349 applicants for 50 seats. Nursing accepts 50 students in January and August Radiology had 386 applicants for 32 seats; fall admission only Respiratory Therapy had 146 applicants for 32 seats; fall admission only

    9. Allied Health and Nursing Admissions Process Criteria Three factors are used to admit students into the Health Science Programs The factors are: Grade point average Number of college hours completed Course Success Weighting

    10. Grade Point Average – Weighted Differently for Nursing than for Allied Health Programs The higher a person’s GPA, the more points they accrue toward admissions Examples: 3.8 GPA earns more points than a 2.5 GPA

    11. Number of College Hours -Weighted Differently for Nursing than for Allied Health Programs The more college credits a person has, the more points they accrue toward admissions Examples: 65 college credit hours earns more points than 21 credit hours

    12. Success Weighted Courses Program Coordinators have selected certain courses as predictors of student success in health science programs Each program has a different set of courses identified. Grades earned in the success courses earn points toward admissions

    13. Points Assigned to Grades in Success Courses Example: An “A” in BIO 180 will earn a student 5 success points toward admission to the nursing program A “C” in BIO 180 will earn a student 3 points toward admission to the nursing program

    14. Nursing Calculations Weighted Factors Factor Maximum Points/Each Category: GPA 25 College Hours 10 Success Courses 20 Total 55

    15. NursingGPA and Credit Hour Calculations GPA Points 2.500-2.750 10 2.751-3.000 13 3.001-3.250 16 3.251-3.500 19 3.501-3.750 22 3.751-4.000 25 Number of College Hours Points 1-15 2 15.1-30 4 30.1-45 6 45.1-60 8 60+ 10

    16. Points Assigned to Grades in Success Courses - Nursing A = 5 points B = 4 points C = 3 points All other grades = 0 points

    17. Course Success Weighting/ Nursing Grades points: A 5 B 4 C 3 All other grades 0 Success Courses/Nursing:BIO-180 BIO-181BIO-119PSY-104

    18. Sample Calculation/Nursing Student has: Has completed 24 college credits 3.0 grade point average Has completed the following success courses for nursing with the following grades assigned: BIO 180 “C” = 3 success points PSY 104 “A” = 5 success points

    19. Nursing Example Success Point Calculation BIO 180 Grade = C 3 points for C grade = 3 points PSY 104 Grade =A 5 points for A grade = 5 points

    20. Sample Nursing Student Admission Point Total GPA points = 13 College Credit Points = 4 Success Weighted Courses = 8 Total Admissions Points = 25 points

    21. Health SciencesGPA and Credit Hour Calculations GPA Points 2.500-2.750 5 2.751-3.000 7 3.001-3.250 9 3.251-3.500 11 3.501-3.750 13 3.751-4.000 15 Number of College Hours Points 1-15 2 15.1-30 4 30.1-45 6 45.1-60 8 60+ 10

    22. Points Assigned to Grades in Success Courses – Health Sciences

    23. Success CoursesHealth Science Program

    24. Sample Calculation/Radiology Student has: Has completed 24 college credits 3.0 grade point average Has completed the following success courses with the following grades assigned: BIO 115 “A” MTH 101 “B” MRT 110 “B”

    25. Sample Radiology Student Admission Point Total GPA (3.0) = 7 points College credit hours = 4 points Student has BIO-115 with an A 3 points X 5 credit hours = 15 points Student has MTH-101 with a B 2 points X 4 credit hours = 8 points Student has MTH-101 with a B Student has MRT-110 with a B— 2 points X 3 credit hours = 6 points

    26. Total Points – Radiology Example GPA = 7 points College credits = 4 points Total points for success courses = 15 for BIO-115 + 8 for MTH-101 + 6 for MRT-110 = 29 Pts Grand total: 40 points

    27. Your Admissions Score GPA: Number of College Credit Hours: Points/Success Weighting Courses: What is your total score?

    28. Minimum Admission Scores – Fall 2006 Health Information Technology = 34 points Nursing = 38 points Polysomnography (Fall 04) = 14 points Radiologic Technology = 50 points Respiratory Therapy = 42 points

    29. What Next? When making your course selection, pay very careful attention to the Success Weighted Courses. Make an appointment appointment with an Academic Advisor to plan a schedule that will allow you to compete successfully for a seat in one of the health science programs.
