  1. Sleep Apnea: The Risk Factors, Effects, and its Treatment Have you ever imagined how life would be if you had trouble breathing? We understand how easily we are able to breathe very subconsciously without even making any kind of effort. Only when you are facing some kind of breathing difficulty, do you realize the importance of normal breathing. If you have breathing problems during the day, you can always get medical help and take medication to handle the situation. However, what would happen if you are not able to breathe normally while you are in an unconscious state while you are sleeping? Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that severe people suffer from. Sleep apnea is a very serious occurrence where there is a difficulty in breathing during sleep. People who suffer from sleep apnea and do not treat it can be prone to difficulty in breathing several times during the night. The oxygen does not reach the brain and the rest of the body, hence there is trouble breathing. These pauses in breathing can last somewhere between a few seconds to minutes. On an average, they occur at least 30-40 times per hour which is a huge compromise on sleep. Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that needs strict medical attention.

  2. Types of sleep apnea: There are two types of sleep apnea conditions: 1. Obstructive sleep apnea: This type is more commonly witnessed among several people. This condition is caused when the air flow is hindered due to the relaxation of throat muscles, thus leading to an unsteady form. 2. Central sleep apnea: Here, the brain is unable to signal the muscles to breathe. This is caused by problems in the respiratory control center.

  3. Risk Factors: Everyone can be prone to sleep apnea. There are no fixed criteria involved here to determine who gets it. However, you can take into consideration the several risk factors that could lead to sleep apnea. Some of them are as follows:  Gender: Males are more prone to sleep apnea when compared to women.  Obesity: When has being overweight done anyone any good? Gaining some extra pounds can lead to sleep apnea. Physical exercise is an important lifestyle change that needs to be adapted in each and every individual’s life.

  4.  Age: Over the age of 40 or 45, you will be experiencing snoring habits as well as sleep apnea in some cases.  Heredity: Cannot really escape this one, can you? If you know that there are hereditary factors involved, take action and start prevention immediately.  Nasal obstruction: Cold, cough and any problems with respect to your sinus or a deviated septum can lead to sleep apnea. Effects of sleep apnea: Sleep apnea can lead to numerous health problems such as an elevated blood pressure, higher chances of stroke, heart diseases such as heart failures and abnormal heart beats, diabetes, depression etc. It really differs from person to person. Untreated

  5. sleep apnea can lead to a decrease in efficiency and everyday productivity. Sleep apnea treatment: Sleep apnea treatment for mild cases can be done through simple lifestyle changes such as losing weight, getting fit, consuming less alcohol, giving up smoking, sleeping on your side etc. But when it comes to more intensified cases, you might have to get medical help. Continuous positive airway pressure is a sleep apnea treatment involving a mask that delivers air continuously to your nose. This ensures better air flow thus preventing any difficulty in breathing. It is by far the most common sleep apnea treatment. Sleep is crucial for the body to function. Get rid of sleep apnea to lead an active life!
