    1. ABET Design Considerations/Realistic Constraints Thomas G. Cleaver University of Louisville Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering March 8, 2005

    3. Economic Goals for engineering design: Minimize: materials for product materials for production energy for production time to market engineering effort Maximize value to consumer efficiency of production

    4. Environmental Goals for an engineering design: Where possible, use recyclable materials in product. Where possible, use recyclable materials in manufacture. Clean production. Use of alternate materials or approaches. Minimize energy use in manufacture. Minimize mass (to minimize energy use in shipping). Minimize energy use of product. Pollution prevention. Minimize waste (ultimately, zero discharge).

    5. Sustainability Definition: The product/system/process can be continued indefinitely into the future. Implication: Non-renewable resources are not used up. Goals for an engineering design: Where possible, use recyclable materials in product. Where possible, use recyclable materials in manufacture. Clean production. Use of alternate materials or approaches. Minimize energy use in manufacture. Minimize mass (to minimize energy use in shipping). Minimize energy use of product. The product or service replaces a less sustainable one. Pollution prevention. Minimize waste (ultimately, zero discharge). Life-cycle accounting. Extend lifetime of device (so it isnt thrown away).

    6. Manufacturability (constructability) Designing for manufacturability (DFM) Shape, size, quantity Efficient design Quality Product development cycle Manufacturing process selection Tolerancing Design for assembly (DFA) Quality control techniques Value engineering Reliability

    7. Ethical Consider public health and safety. Blow whistle, if necessary. Avoid conflicts of interest. Be honest with claims and estimates. Be honest with research and testing. Reject bribery. Maintain and improve your technical competence. Dont undertake tasks for which you are untrained. Seek and offer honest criticism. Correct errors. Credit contributions of others. Treat others fairly. Assist colleagues and coworkers. Give an honest days work for an honest days pay. Deliver good engineering value to the customer and end user.

    8. Legal Know the laws pertaining to your specialty. Know the standards of your profession and the project. Zoning. Copyright, patent, and trademark laws.

    9. Health and Safety Consider public health and safety in your designs. Make sure high-voltages are inaccessible to the public. Avoid use of hazardous chemicals. Consider the effects if the product falls into the hands of a child. Environmental concerns.

    10. Social The values and beliefs of the people must be known. Does this product offend a minority? Where should we build the cell tower? How much violence should be in this video game?

    11. Political Where should we put that cell tower? Can my company get a tax incentive for moving to Indiana?
