  2. What is research? Locating facts on different subjects

  3. What type of books do we use for research? • Reference books • Nonfiction or subject/topic books

  4. Where are the nonfiction (subject) books located in our media center? On the right side of the media center and along the back wall.

  5. What do we know about nonfiction (subject) books? They contain true facts so that’s why we can use them for research!

  6. What call letters do you find on the spine of nonfiction (subject) books? Dewey numbers What goes on my spine?

  7. Example of spine of nonfiction book The Lincoln Memorial Bin Title of Book Author Letters 973.7 Bin Call Number

  8. What is another type of book we can use for research? Reference books

  9. Where are reference books located in our media center? In the shelves located at the front near the computer stations. This way!

  10. What are reference books? Books that give you information about topics or words.

  11. Identify the Reference Books Tell me all about yourself.

  12. ENCYCLOPEDIA Book with articles about people, places, and things.

  13. Can an encyclopedia just be one volume? YES!

  14. Can an encyclopedia set just cover one topic? YES!!

  15. ALMANAC • Useful when locating trivia • Published yearly with up-to-date facts

  16. ATLAS A book of maps

  17. DICTIONARY Book that gives the definitions, pronunciations, part(s) of speech and spelling of words.

  18. What are the 2 types of dictionaries? • Abridged • Unabridged Oh no, I have a split personality!

  19. What is an abridged dictionary? • Most commonly used • User friendly • Less entries than unabridged Ooh, Ooh, you wanna be like us! We’re friendly and so, so easy to use!

  20. What is an unabridged dictionary? • NOT User friendly • Contains all words • Can find origin of words I’m BIG, I’m BAD, and I know it!

  21. THESAURUS Book of synonyms-words that mean the same. Sometimes they contain antonyms.

  22. What else can we use for research other than reference and nonfiction books? Internet Interviews Magazines CD’s Hello, out there!
