  6. Third Grade • Folktales From Around The World

  7. Elements of tales • Fictional stories passed down through the generations • Many are animal stories that teach people a lesson. ie, Aesop’s Fables • Leading folklore scholars, brothers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, collected stories for Grimm’s Fairy Tales

  8. Elements of tales, cont’d • They often include trolls, magicians, sorcerers, giants and witches • Many have the trickster as the hero • Hans Christian Anderson, a Danish author, wrote delightful classics such as The Ugly Duckling and the Emperor’s New Clothes.

  9. Fourth Grade American Tall Tall Heroes • Paul Bunyan • John Henry • Pecos Bill • Davy Crockett • Johnny Appleseed

  10. More Tall Tale Heroes • Rip Van Winkle • Febold Feboldson • Captain Stormalong Tall tales usually deal with larger-than-life characters, superstitions and customs.
