Cavities form when acids in the mouth wear down, or erode, a tooth's hard outer layer (enamel). 2 Plaque Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. Bacteria in plaque produce acids after you eat or drink. These acids can destroy tooth enamel and cause cavities and gingivitis (gum disease). 3 Sensitive Teeth Your teeth become sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks when the enamel is worn away and the dentin is exposed.
