  4. Examples of Leaders • Leaders can be found in every day life. They range from people in charge of businesses and schools, to the people that are running our government.

  5. 3 Approaches to Leadership • Laissez-Faire Leadership • Authoritarian Leadership • Democratic Leadership

  6. Laissez-Faire Leadership This type of leader has little direction over the group. They give no certain instructions and do not oversee what is being accomplished within the group. Often times groups with this type of leadership aren’t able to accomplish their goals. • This type of leadership actually lacks most of the basic skills of a leader. They may begin a group meeting, but then have little input after that.

  7. This type of leader holds total control over a group. Any discussion that takes place in a group will be addressed directly to the leader. Often times this type of leader is the expert out of the group. They know exactly what is to be done and how it should be done. They are often used when a job must be completed in a timely fashion. Authoritarian Leadership

  8. This type of leader allows everyone in the group to have a point of view. They are simply there to keep the discussion moving. This type of leadership leaves room for equality of all group members. Each person’s ideas are valued and considered. Democratic Leadership

  9. Pragmatic Leadership • Pragmatic is derived from the Greek word pragma which • means action. • Pragmatic leadership is when you use a practical approach to problems and affairs. • This style of leadership was introduced by • William James. He was a professor at • Harvard University. • Pragmatic leadership can be defined as a mixture • of democratic and authoritarian leadership • approaches. There is opportunity for everyone, yet • the leader has a defined way of doing things.

  10. Pragmatic Leadership Donald Rumsfeld Donald Rumsfeld has been secretary of defense for Gerald Ford and George W. Bush. Between his terms in office, he has been well-known for turning around failing companies. He wrote a paper titled Rumsfeld’s Rules. His philosophy for running companies is to be unique and direct. Offer opportunity for everyone, yet make sure there is a stern leader who will make sure that everyone is doing what they are assigned to do.

  11. Pragmatic Leadership President JFK ordered assassinations of foreign leaders, participated in womanizing, and was linked to the mafia. Many of his acts during his presidency were uncalled for. John F. Kennedy

  12. PROS Constant watch over the group No chance for argument because there is a defined objective CONS Many opportunities for people to become angered People tend to feel less needed in the group Pragmatic Leadership

  13. Compassionate Leadership • Compassionate leadership is when you sympathize with others and allow them room to work on their own. • This type of leadership offers the ability to be there for others without withdrawing and without judgement. • Habits of generosity, believing in people, meeting needs, encouraging friends, getting excited about good things that happen to others and challenging people; these are the steps to compassionate service.

  14. Compassionate Leadership “The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” During his presidency, Roosevelt always tried to keep the peace. He worked towards helping the little man and making sure there was equal opportunity.

  15. PROS Everyone feels welcome and needed People respond well to positive motivation Increases self-esteem CONS No certain direction Sometimes people may become less driven without direct instruction Compassionate Leadership
