  2. THIS YEAR WORKPLACE VIOLENCE AS WE KNOW IT TURNS 24 YEARS OLD. Today, responding to work place violence requires attention to more than just a physical attack.

  3. Violence of Four Types • Violence by Criminals 76% • Violence Directed at Employees 5% • Violence against Coworkers 13% • Violence in Personal Relationships 6%

  4. WHOSE CONCERN IS IT? Employers have a legal & ethical obligation to promote a work environment free from threats and violence.

  5. PREVENTING VIOLENCE • Bullying, Threats, Harassment, • Domestic Violence, Stalking • Emotional Abuse, Intimidation IF LEFT UNCHECKED ALL WILL LIKELY RESULT IN VIOLENT BEHAVIOR.

  6. PLUS FACTOR • When violence comes from an employee or someone close to an employee there is a much greater chance of seeing a warning sign in behavior.

  7. SIGNS • Ominous, Specific Threats • Increasing Belligerence • Recent Acquisition/Fascination With Weapons • Obsession with Coworker/Supervisor or Employee Grievance • Preoccupation with Violent Themes.

  8. SIGNS CONTINUED • Noticeable Changes in Behavior • Angry, Sullen, or Depressed • Homicidal/Suicidal Comments or Threats
