  1. What Is Depository System And Its Functions In Indian Stock Market ? The capital market is a place where investors can buy and sell securities. Capital markets can be divided into two types: primary and secondary markets. An Initial Public Offering (IPO), a Rights Issue, a Private Placement, and a Preferred Allocation occur on the primary market, where securities are first issued. The secondary market is the place where shares after being issued for the first time are traded. The stock market provides a platform for investors to buy and sell shares already available on the market.

Similar to a bank, a depository accepts deposits and withdraws securities and money on the stock market. A depository also allows investors to deposit and withdraw their shares. Features of depository – A depository system is an institution that holds securities.  Depositories interact with investors through depository participants in the stock market.  SEBI's certificate is required for Depository Participants (DPs) to offer their services.  Demat accounts, also known as depository accounts, are mandatory for investors.  Electronic securities transfers and transaction settlements are controlled by depositories through DPs.  Depositories can hypothecate dematerialized securities against bank loans.  Depositories issue receipts of bonus shares in an electronic form.  Depository institutions offer nomination facilities in their Demat accounts. 

Indian Depository Receipt – Global depository receipts are replicas of Indian depository receipts. Indian depository receipts are financial instruments that allow foreign companies to list on the Indian stock exchange and for Indian investors to benefit from global competitive companies.
