  4. Cultural Diffusion • Cultural Diffusion-People borrow ideas, materials, products and other inventions from other societies. The process by which an idea, an invention, or some other cultural item is borrowed from a foreign source. • People borrow ideas, materials, products, and other inventions from other societies.

  5. Culture Shock and Reentry Shock • Culture Shock-The strain that people from one culture experience when they must reorient themselves to the ways of a new culture. • Reentry Shock-Is experienced upon returning home after living in another culture

  6. Folkways • Norms that apply to the mundane aspects or details of daily life • Shoes and slippers (SIUCN) • Bowing or shaking hands • Eating while you walk • People are products of cultural experiences but are not cultural replicas of one another

  7. Mores • Norms that people define as essential to the well-being of a group. • Examples?

  8. Cultural Relativism • The perspective that a foreign culture should not be judged by the standards of a home culture and that a behavior or way of thinking must be examined in its cultural context.

  9. The Home Culture as the Standard • Ethnocentrism • A viewpoint that uses one culture as the standard for judging the worth of foreign ways. Being culture bound. • Reverse Ethnocentrism • A type of ethnocentrism in which the home culture is regarded as inferior to a foreign culture.

Rice Central in Japanese Material and Non-material Culture • Rice wine or sake used in religious ceremonies, including marriage ceremony • Many traditional foods are based on rice • Sweet red beans and rice bring in the new year • Mochi, a sweet made from rice is served at celebrations • Most traditional Japanese meals include rice
