  2. BEACHES & SUN MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA At the shore in Miami Beach, visitors can swim, surf and jet ski in the warm and crystal-clear Atlantic waters. You can also nap on the white sands, work on a tan or simply watch the beautiful people, especially at South Beach, a favourite of models and celebrities. MAUI, HAWAII Tropical trade winds cool Maui's thirty miles of glorious black, white and red sand beaches. With a constellation of splendid sandy spots ranging from secluded secrets to bustling beaches with restaurants and board hire, Maui has a beach to suit beachcombers, surfers, picnickers and swimmers. SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA Beaches and bays dot the coast of California's second-largest city. Top-rated, family-friendly Coronado Beach is set among turn-of-the-century mansions. Other gorgeous sandy spots include Blacks Beach, where sunbathers go au naturel, and La Jolla Shores, popular for snorkelling and kayaking. KAUAI, HAWAII With about 50 miles of beaches, Kauai has plenty of shoreline to explore. Swimming is great just about anywhere, but most people prefer the beaches on the north and south coasts, where the white sands stretch on and on and surfers refine their craft.

ADVENTURE KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII Located about two miles north of the airport, the Kona Coast State Park's trio of tranquil, uncrowded beaches cater to swimming, kayaking, picnicking and snorkelling. It's possible to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles among the arches and caves of the offshore coral reefs. Surfers congregate in the winter for the big surf. GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA At this behemoth of a canyon, white water and calm water rafting trips plunge along 277 river miles, fixed-wing and helicopter tours soar above its mile- deep maw and hikes and mule rides cover the terrain from rim to rim. Horseback tours operate from stables just outside the park's south entrance. YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CALIFORNIA Within the nearly 1,200 square miles of one of America's first national parks are top-notch hiking trails to waterfalls, giant sequoia groves, meadows and the iconic granite cliff, Half Dome. Three stables inside the park boundaries lead horse and mule rides that last from two hours up to a full day. MOAB,USA With three scenic byways, plus Canyonlands and Arches national parks close at hand, Moab inspires outdoor desert adventures. Cycle, climb or hike among sandstone cliffs and mind-blowing rock formations, raft the Colorado River or take a four-wheel-drive day trip through the arid backcountry.

  4. HISTORY & CULTURE BOSTON "The Athens of America" has an important place in American history. One can explore the city's past and present along the Freedom Trail and at Faneuil Hall, the USS Constitution, the Kennedy Library, Fenway Park, the Public Garden and the Boston Public Library, the first of its kind in the United States. NEW YORK CITY Though it is not the oldest city in America, no place has more history or culture than New York. WASHINGTON DC Perhaps the most political city in the world, Washington D.C.'s history has been coloured by democracy, debate, scandal and progress. Visitors can relive the highs and lows of American history at the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian Institution, Capitol Hill and the White House.

Follow an evening of poker or baccarat with a headline show or nightclubbing in Reno or nearby Sparks.

  8. SNOWBOARDING BANFF, CANADA WHISTLER, CANADA Attractive, Swiss-style Whistler, site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, attracts droves of American, Japanese, German and English skiers. Visitors ski and board down sparkling Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, ricochet around forested curves on snowmobiles, dangle above it all on Zip treks and have cares soothed away at luxurious Taman Sari spa. The stunning Banff National Park offers the best powder skiing in the world. The list of stellar shopping destinations and famous names is almost endless, so pack light and stock up on everything from electronics to vintage clothes while you're there. FRANCISCO The choice of distinctly different shopping districts in San F r a n c i s c o overwhelming. Whether you want to opt for the opulent Westfield Centre or go funk fantastic in the eclectic Mission or tourist traditional in Union Square, you'll definitely need to bring an empty suitcase when you visit. i s a l m o s t BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA Developed as a shopping district in the 1970s, Beverly Hills' high end Rodeo Drive is a ritzy throwback to the halcyon days of Main Street shopping.
