What is Lung Cancer? • Cancerous cells that form • in the lining of the lungs • It can be in one or both • of the lungs • Can form cancerous tumors which can spread
Statistics • The leading cancerous death • Second most common cancer • About 200,000 cases annually • An estimated 159,390 people will die from lung cancer this year.
Risk Factors • Tobacco (cigarette smoke) is the #1 cause • Accounts for 90% of all cases • 25% is from second-hand smoke • Radon • Asbestos exposure • Pollution • Family history • Age
Types of Lung Cancer • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) • Most common type • About 80-85% are NSCLC • Grows more slowly • Small Cell Lung Cancer • Spreads more quickly and aggressively • Accounts for 15% of cases • Found mostly in heavy smokers
Symptoms • Chest pain • Wheezing • Fatigue • Loss of appetite • Continuous cough • Coughing up blood • Shortness of breathe
Diagnoses and Treatments • Biopsy • CT scan • X-Ray • Surgery • Chemotherapy • Radiation therapy
Stages and Treatments of SCLC • Limited Stage • The cancer is confined to one area of the chest • Include nearby lymph nodes • Treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy • Extensive Stage • A tumor has spread beyond the lung • Accounts for 70% of SCLC • Treated with chemotherapy only
Research and Studies • Clinical trials are taking place • Many ongoing studies to try find new treatments and improve the current method of treatment • Smokers with lung cancer that quit smoking can lessen the chance of having their cancer return • Over 10,000 people are cured each year.
