Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are available in several forms. They can be taken as tablets, lozenges, powders, sprays, and injections. While all of them reduce pain, some only relieve pain, some contain steroids that can cause side effects including gastrointestinal problems and bleeding. For this reason, many doctors prefer to prescribe NSAIDs for patients with moderate to severe arthritis symptoms. Corticosteroids are generally reserved for use in advanced stages of inflammatory arthritis when other anti-inflammatory treatments have failed.
