  1. Sussex : Everything You Need to Know Sussex, a Country in South East England Sussex, from the Old English Sūþsēaxe, is a historic county in South East England that was formerly an independent medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom. What is Sussex England famous for? Sussex is known for its strong tradition of bonfire celebrations and its proud musical heritage. The county is home to the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe, England's largest arts festival.

  2. Why is Sussex so important? Sussex was home to some of Europe's earliest known hominids (Homo heidelbergensis), whose remains at Boxgrove have been dated to 500,000 years ago. Sussex played a key role in the Roman conquest of Britain, with some of the earliest significant signs of a Roman presence in Britain. Is Sussex a rich area? The most and least expensive areas within the two ceremonial counties were reported as follows: West Sussex: most expensive area Amberley, £882,857 – least expensive area Three Bridges, £291,522. East Sussex: most expensive area Ditchling, £722,266 – least expensive area St Leonards Green, £217,785. Is Sussex a nice place to live? Sussex is a fantastic place to live and there are so many reasons to want to move here. According to a recent study, in fact, two areas in Sussex rank as some of the best places to live in the country - placing sixth and 14th. Who ruled Sussex? The earldom of Sussex seems later to have been sometimes combined with that of Kent. Æthelberht of Wessex was ruling Sussex and the other south-eastern kingdoms by 855, and succeeded to the kingship of Wessex on the death of his brother, King Æthelbald, thus bringing Sussex fully under the crown of Wessex. Why is Sussex, England called The End of the World? It is thought that the name arrived with the railway – it was here that the 'up' line met the 'down' line during construction of the Brighton Main Line in what is now the World's End area. Are there any sandy beaches in East Sussex? One of the most beautiful and best beaches in Kent and East Sussex for families is Camber Sands, a super stretch of beach that seems to go on for miles and miles. It's all about the beach at Camber with steep sand dunes. Where is the safest place in West Sussex? There are safer parts of West Sussex, starting with Hassocks which ranks as the safest area in West Sussex, followed up by Aldwick in second place, and North Horsham in third place.

  3. Climate The coastal resorts of Sussex and neighboring Hampshire are the sunniest places in the United Kingdom. The coast has consistently more sunshine than the inland areas: sea breezes, blowing off the sea, tend to clear any cloud from the coast. The sunshine average is approximately 1,900 hours a year; this is much higher than the UK average of 1,340 hours a year. Most of Sussex lies in hardiness zone 8; the exception is the coastal plain west of Brighton, which lies in the milder zone 9. Rainfall is below average with the heaviest precipitation on the South Downs with 950 mm (37 in) of rainfall per year. The close proximity of Sussex to the Continent of Europe, results in cold spells in winter and hot, humid weather in summer. The climate of the coastal districts is strongly influenced by the sea, which, because of its tendency to warm up slower than land, can result in cooler temperatures than inland in the summer. In the autumn months, the coast sometimes has higher temperatures. Rainfall during the summer months is mainly from thunderstorms and thundery showers; from January to March the heavier rainfall is due to prevailing south-westerly frontal systems. In winter, the east winds can be as cold as further inland.Selsey is known as a tornado hotspot, with small tornadoes hitting the town in 1986, 1998 and 2000,with the 1998 tornado causing an estimated £10 million of damage to 1,000 buildings. Population The combined population of Sussex as of 2011 is about 1.6 million. In 2011, Sussex had a population density of 425 per km2, higher than the average for England of 407 per km2. The earliest statement as to the population of Sussex is made by Bede, who describes the county as containing in 681 land of 7,000 families; allowing ten to a family (a reasonable estimate at that date), the total population would be 70,000. In 1693 the county was stated to have contained 21,537 houses. The 1801 census found that the population was 159,311. The decline of the Sussex ironworks probably accounts for the small increase of population during several centuries, although after the massacre of St Bartholomew upwards of 1,500 Huguenots landed at Rye, and in 1685, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, many more refugees were added to the county. The population of Sussex was 550,446 in 1891 and was 605,202 in 1901.
