What is Psilocybe Cyanescens?

Psilocybe cyanescens, sometimes called “wavy caps,” is a potent member of the family of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Its main compounds responsible for creating psychedelic effects are psilocybin and psilocin. It may share similarities with other magic mushroom varieties but its appearance and amount of psychoactive compounds sets it apart.

  1. PSILOCYBECYANESCENS ALSO KNOWN AS “WAVY CAPS” A member of the family of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

  2. Two Main Compounds PSILOCYBIN PSILOCIN These are the main compounds responsible for creating psychedelic effects. It may share similarities with other magic mushroom varieties but its appearance and amount of psychoactive compounds sets it apart.

  3. Psilocybe Cyanescens Identification The easiest way to identify Psilocybe Cyanescens is by looking at its cap. Mature P. Cyanescens caps have a distinct wavy appearance. This cap also changes color depending on the mushroom’s levels of hydration. It’s caramel to chestnut-brown when moist but fades to pale buff or slightly yellowish when dried. These wavy caps can measure from 1.5 to 5cm in diameter. This also applies to the mushroom’s other body parts. The gills under the caps are light brown to dark purple brown in maturity, with lighter gill edges. These are connected to the whitish stem which is 3-6cm in length, and 3-6mm thick which is usually enlarged at the base. Psilocybe cyanescens also produces purple-brown to purple-gray or purple-black spores. Both the odor and taste of P. cyanescens are starchy, comparable to ground flour. Generally, bruise bluish or blue-green wherever it’s damaged and this stain remains visible after drying. This staining is most visible on the stem but also takes place on other parts of the mushroom such as the gills, and cap.

  4. Psilocybe Cyanescens Habitat Psilocybe Cyanescens typically fruit when temperatures drop to 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This means fruiting usually takes place between October and February. In the United States, P. Cyanescens grows mainly in the Pacific Northwest, south to the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s also been seen in other locations such as Western Europe, Central Europe, New Zealand, and some parts of west Asia particularly Iran. This psychedelic mushroom prefers to grow on wood chips especially in and along the perimeter of mulched plat beds in urban areas. In the wild, they grow on lignin-rich substrates.

  5. Psilocybe Cyanescens Lookalike On some occasions, Psilocybe Cyanescens has been confused with Galerina Marginata. The two mushrooms have the same appearance, share similar habits, and can grow side by side leading to confusion. Unfortunately, Galerina Marginatacontains Amatoxins. Amatoxins are responsible for cases of fatal mushroom poisonings in humans.  To differentiate Psilocybe Cyanescens from Galerina Marginata, check how it reacts to injury or handling. Because of the absence of psilocybin and psilocin, G. Marginatadoesn’t have any bruising on its caps or stems. Galerina Marginata

  6. Psilocybe Cyanescens Dosage Remember P. Cyanescens is known for its high levels of psychedelic compounds, psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin. Collectively, these three substances are referred to as indoles. North America strains of P. Cyanescens contain 0.66% to 1.96% total indole content by dry weight. The European fruiting bodies contain 0.39% to 0.75% total. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to dosing with P. Cyanescens. They’re among the safest, naturally-occurring psychedelics out there so your chances for overdosing or becoming addicted are virtually non-existent. While a regular dose of weaker magic shrooms such as Psilocybe cubensis is around 2g to 3.5g, newbies are advised to take only half of the weight they would normally take for P. cubensis when ingesting P. cyanescens.
