  1. Indispensable MP5 Parts to Have on Hand (and Where You Can Get Them)

  2. Anyone reading this that owns an MP5 probably doesn’t need us to tell you it’s a well-oiled machine (or design, at least) that is smooth-shooting and is a joy to use. But with a fairly complex, finely-tuned roller-delayed blowback action and plenty of moving parts (if you can excuse that figure of speech) there’s a lot that can go wrong. Fatigued springs, broken or deformed extractors, and ejectors are just the tip of the iceberg. Fortunately, you can learn from the experience of other MP5 shooters, as to what parts tend to go first.

  3. Here are some of the MP5 parts you should have on hand as well as where you can get them. Failures to Feed (MP5 Magazines, Magazine Springs) You might not technically consider them parts since they aren’t integral to the firearm itself, but after springs, magazines tend to wear out first. This could be because the magazine itself is basically a big spring with a housing and a follower. All the same, a magazine with a fatigued spring isn’t going to let the platform feed well, which more or less makes the MP5 part and parcel of the platform.

  4. So, if you have one spare “part” around, make it an MP5 magazine. Actually, make it a few. If one stops chugging along at the range, you should have several spare in your bag. Unless you like shooting the MP5 as a single-shot subgun; and who does? Failure to Extract (Extractors, Ejectors) After feeding issues, the next biggest problems are probably associated with extraction and ejection. Extractors, ejectors, and springs for both can fatigue easily, as they are small pieces of metal that take a pounding each time the action cycles.

  5. You don’t need to keep parts like these in your range bag as it’s a relatively complex field repair to make, but you should have a few at home. One note, though. If your MP5 is failing to extract, check the bolt face and bolt carrier group before assuming there’s a malfunction with the extractor or ejector. It could just be fouling, and if so, cleaning the MP5 might bring it back to speed. On Failures to Fire and Accuracy (Firing Pins, Barrels) Arguably the rarest malfunctions here, a failure to fire could be a result of one of two primary problems. The firing pin, or the firing pin spring.

  6. If the MP5 firing pin spring is fatigued, there may not be a problem with the firing pin itself. The spring just might not be able to retain enough energy and recycle it forcefully enough to ignite the primer. All the same, firing pins can crack due to faulty metallurgy or tempering, and if the firing pin is too soft and gets deformed or mushroomed due to hard use, that can be a problem too. So make these two MP5 parts must-haves for your bench, too. Finally, you should keep a spare MP5 barrel because if you shoot through enough rounds, you will need to replace it.

  7. Truthfully, it will probably take more than 50,000 rounds before you need to replace an MP5 barrel since 9mm generates such low chamber pressures, but it’s still better to be prepared with a spare than to find out at the range that your groups are wandering because your MP5 is gradually becoming a smoothbore. Where Can You Get These MP5 Parts? Looking for these MP5 parts? Check out Zenith Firearms via the previous link, which sells American-made MP5 platforms (like the ZF-5) in addition to MP5 parts that are also made in America. They carry the parts listed here in addition to a wide range of MP5 accessories. Check them out via the link above or get in touch with them directly at Info@ZenithFirearms.com.
