  2. What Is Japanese Umbrella Pines? Japanese umbrella pines, also known as Sciadopitys verticillata, is a species of coniferous tree that is native to Japan. It is known for its unique umbrella-shaped canopy of foliage, and is often used as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks. The tree can grow up to 40 feet tall and has a lifespan of up to 1,000 years. It is quite slow- growing and prefers well-drained soil and cool, humid climates.

  3. What Is Japanese Umbrella Pines? It is a type of evergreen coniferous tree that is native to Japan and its neighboring countries. These trees can be found in gardens, parks, and other outdoor spaces as ornamental plants. They are known for their large, umbrella-shaped crowns which provide an eye-catching silhouette in any landscape.

  4. ATTRIBUTES OF SCIADOPITY The Umbrella Pine rarely grows taller than 50' under cultivation, compared to its native habitat where it can reach a height of 90'. It takes around 100 years for it to achieve maturity because of how slowly it develops. It is known as the Japenese Umbrella Pines because the tips of the stems, which resemble the ribs of an umbrella, are surrounded by whorls of 20 to 30 flattened, 2" to 5" long, dark green needles. At the extremities of the branches, two to four inch long upright cones that drop their seeds after about two years can be seen. Young umbrella pines have stiffly protruding branches that give the tree a thick, oval appearance.

  5. CHOOSING THE APPROPRIATE SCIADOPITYS Depending on the cultivar, USDA hardiness zones 4 through 8 or 9 are ideal for growing Japanese umbrella pines. Select a bright area where your Umbrella Pine can flourish. A taller type should be given a position of honour as a specimen tree in the landscape, while a dwarf variation is ideal in a rock garden or urban garden due to its sluggish growth. Please let us know if you're unsure which Sciadopitys is best for your garden so that our specialists can guide you.

  6. CARING Caring for japanese umbrella pines is essential in order to keep them healthy and vibrant. Here are some tips on how to properly care for your japanese umbrella pines:

  10. FERTILIZING Fertilize japanese umbrella pines twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. Use a fertilizer specifically formulated for evergreen trees to ensure optimal growth and development.

  11. PRUNING Prune japanese umbrella pines if necessary, but avoid removing more than 10% of the foliage in any particular year. This will ensure that the tree retains its characteristic shape.
