Cichlid Fish Information

As an aquarist for a long time (many, many years), I have always had cichlid fish in my aquarium. And while I find it difficult to explain my fascination for fish to non-fish people, I can easily explain to newbies (hobbyists) why I love breeding cichlids. In a word: behavior. Members of the cichlid family are among the "most intelligent" freshwater aquarium fish with the most progressive behavior. They tend and guard the territories, undergo elaborate courtship rituals, and then tend and raise their eggs and young.

  1. Cichlid Fish Information As an aquarist for a long time (many, many years), I have always had cichlid fish in my aquarium. The disadvantage of cichlid fish is that some of their behavior is not particularly suited for a peaceful community aquarium. Claiming and maintaining an area is not enough, they have to reorganize it as per their wish. And because it is difficult for other fish to escape their territorial defense in the small closed systems, glass boxes of our aquariums, the results often result in chaos and death. But as I hope to show, specialized community aquariums that are geared to cichlids are actually possible with a little care in setting up and choosing a pool partner. And once their behavioral needs are met, cichlids provide their owners with a rich behavioral repertoire that is not available in most other aquarium fish. I see cichlid fish as the tropical fish of the "thinking person": aesthetics with a touch of treats. I'm here to say that cichlids have gotten a bad rap all these years. Yes, they are territorial and often aggressive, and yes, they can be troublesome in community aquariums, but I like to think of them as surprisingly intelligent and interesting fish with special needs. Once the aquarist recognizes these needs and gives the cichlid fish what it needs, it will be rewarded with interesting and complex behaviors, especially with regard to breeding, that are not available in most other aquarium fish. . As Breeze Walker (1978) wrote in his early book All about Cichlids, "Since cichlids are generally larger than most of the tropics, they are often territorial or aggressive and have more individualism than most other tropical

In the further course of this article, I hope to suggest a strategy for keeping cichlids in the home aquarium, especially for beginners or non-cichlid fish experts, so that everyone can enjoy and experience the "essence of cichlids". Can you along the way, I hope to debunk or at least debunk some of the unfair myths associated with these wonderful aquarium fish.
