January 2010 – Oklahoma applied for funding made available by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Early Education and Child Care Initiatives Collaborative effort of health care, early education and child care professionals from: AAP Child Care Bureau State Administrators Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems Family Voices National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

Collaborative effort (continued): National Association for the Education of Young Children National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners National Child Care Information and Technical Assistance Center National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education National Training Institute for Child Care Health Consultants Office of Head Start Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

  4. In March 2010 seven states received the “Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings” funding: Arizona Arkansas Kansas Massachusetts Oklahoma Pennsylvania Washington Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

  5. March 2010 – Funding awarded to Oklahoma Chapter AAP State Level Collaboration: Chapter Child Care Contact (CCCC) of Oklahoma Chapter, AAP Maternal and Child Health Service (MCH) including the ECCS Coordinator, Oklahoma State Department of Health Oklahoma Child Care Resource & Referral Association (OCCRRA) Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

Oklahoma’s Initial Planning Meeting: CCCC invited Nurse Child Care Health Consultants affiliated with the child care resource and referral agency and the Child Care Warmline, as well as MCH Staff Two Train-the-Trainer Sessions planned: - Oklahoma City - April 30, 2010 - Tulsa – May 7, 2010 - Workshops targeted medical professionals, e.g., Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses Sessions to be Co-Trained CCCC and Nurse Child Care Health Consultants Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

Maximum Participation per Workshop 15 Medical Professionals Target Population from: County Health Departments Head Start / Early Head Start Agencies Indian Health Services Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies Tribal Child Care Network Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care SettingsImplementation

Requirements after attending training: Offer a minimum of one class in local community Teach class by December 2010 Notify Oklahoma CCCC of your class and mail copy of sign-in sheet and evaluations Administer the AAP pre-test and post-test and mail to AAP Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care SettingsImplementation

Train-the-Trainer course in Oklahoma City April 30, 2010 Attended by nine medical professionals from six counties representing: Head Start & Early Head Start Public Health (county health departments) Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies OU Health Sciences Center (Clinic/Hospital) Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

Train-the-Trainer course in Tulsa May 7, 2010 Attended by ten medical professionals from four counties representing: Indian Health Services Public Health (county health departments) Head Start & Early Head Start Tribal Child Care Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings Curriculum takes approximately five hours to teach and includes the following modules: Background Preparation How to Administer Medication Documentation Problem Solving Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

Supplemental Materials Oklahoma Provided: Summary of Medication Administration in OKDHS Licensing Requirements How to Dispose of Unused Medicines (from FDA Consumer Health Information) Good Health Handbook for Child Care Providers Additional Sample Forms Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings

What is NOT Covered: Special medications (such as injectable or rectal) Clinical explanation of conditions being treated (such as asthma) Training on use of the EpiPen Insulin, glucagon and diabetes management Healthy Futures: Medication Administration in Early Education and Child Care Settings
