  2. Overview Kidney stones, medically known as nephrolithiasis, are solid mineral deposits that form in the kidneys or urinary tract. They can vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. These stones can be composed of various substances such as calcium, uric acid, struvite, or cystine, and their composition often influences treatment options. Kidney stones can cause intense pain when they move through the urinary tract, leading to symptoms like severe back or abdominal pain, bloody urine, nausea, and vomiting. Factors such as dehydration, diet high in certain minerals, genetics, and certain medical conditions can contribute to their formation. Treatment for kidney stones depends on their size, composition, and location, ranging from conservative measures such as increased fluid intake and pain management to more invasive procedures like lithotripsy or surgical removal. Early detection and management are crucial in preventing complications and recurrent episodes of kidney stones.

  3. How are kidney stones diagnosed? Medical History and Physical Examination: The first step in diagnosing kidney stones is usually a discussion about the patient’s medical history, including symptoms they’re experiencing. Common symptoms of kidney stones include severe pain in the back, side, lower abdomen, or groin, along with nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine, and frequent urination. Imaging Tests: Imaging tests are typically ordered to confirm the presence of kidney stones and to determine their size and location. Urinalysis: A urine sample may be collected and analyzed to check for the presence of blood, crystals, or other substances that may indicate the presence of kidney stones.  Blood Tests: Blood tests may be conducted to assess kidney function and to check for elevated levels of certain substances, such as calcium, uric acid, or creatinine, which can indicate the presence of kidney stones or other related conditions. Imaging Tests: Imaging tests are typically ordered to confirm the presence of kidney stones and to determine their size and location.
