Muslim women who wear hijabs or other head covering are less likely to experience sexual harassment and assault than women who do not cover their hair, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Ottawa surveyed 1,500 Muslim women in Canada about their experiences with sexual harassment and assault. The majority of the women who wore hijabs reported that they had never experienced sexual harassment or assault, while only 12% of women who did not wear hijabs reported the same.

HOW THE HIJAB PROTECTS MUSLIM WOMEN FROM SEXUAL HARASSMENT MUSLIM WOMEN WHO WEAR HIJABS ARE OFTEN THE TARGET OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT, SPECIFICALLY FROM MEN WHO FEEL THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH BEHAVIOR THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED INAPPROPRIATE OR EVEN CRIMINAL IN OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES. BUT A STUDY PUBLISHED EARLIER THIS YEAR IN THE JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY FOUND THAT WEARING A HIJAB ACTUALLY REDUCES THE LIKELIHOOD OF BEING HARASSED. THE RESEARCHERS STUDIED THREE GROUPS OF WOMEN – THOSE WHO WORE HIJABS, THOSE WHO DID NOT WEAR HIJABS, AND THOSE WHO WERE PURPOSELY DRESSED PROVOCATIVELY – AND FOUND THAT ONLY THE WOMEN WHO WERE DELIBERATELY DRESSED PROVOCATIVELY WERE SEXUALLY HARASSED. MUSLIM WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE SEXUAL HARASSMENT THAN ANY OTHER RELIGIOUS GROUP, ACCORDING TO A REPORT BY THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S LAW CENTER. THE HIJAB, OR HEADSCARF, IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON FORMS OF PROTECTION MUSLIM WOMEN HAVE AGAINST SEXUAL HARASSMENT.
