Punctuation is used in different forms and not just as commas with subjective placement in sentences. The rules of punctuation made easy Punctuation is used to separate sentences to allow clarity and meaning. We’ve jotted down a few ways in which punctuation can help structure your sentences in English.

  2. The comma A comma is used to add to the meaning of a sentence. There are other ways such as to emphasise an item, point, or meaning. It is used to organise a group of thoughts or logical groupings. A comma is applied in a series of independent clauses, nouns, adjectives, verbs, phrases, series of phrases, participial phrases, enclosed details, tag questions, and interjections. Example– Pass me the salt, will you? / Stay hydrated with water, fruit juices, and beverages. Also, take up online English classes– the easiest way to learn English grammar from the comfort of your home. Especially, if terms like participial phrases and interjections confuse you! The period / full stop One of the simplest forms of punctuation is the period or the full stop. If your sentences are too long, you can use a full stop to cut them short. Readers love a short sentence. Using a full stop, therefore, helps to end a sentence at its most logical and complete thought. Example – I walked down a straight path until I reached the park. The exclamation mark Most people use the Exclamation Mark (!) to express instruction or exasperation. This mark is also used to express astonishment, surprise, or emphasise a comment. However, it is advisable to use them sparingly. Example –That’s it! / Way to go! The question mark This is no rocket science as you know where a question mark is used, don’t you? However, many people use question marks for sentences that they think is a question. An example where a question mark should NOT be used –How to play poker. [It will never be How to play poker? with a question mark.] This depends on the context of the sentence. If you are being asked how to play poker like “Hi Meryl, can you teach me how to play Poker?” Or “Can you help me with the rules of Poker?” Then it becomes a question. If you are about to explain to someone the rules of the game then you simply start with How to play Poker. There are six more different forms of punctuation including the colon, semicolon, quotation mark, apostrophe, hyphen and dash, and parentheses and brackets. If you want to learn
