  1. P r e c a u t i o n s A g a i n s t H e a r i n g L o s s F o r H u n t e r s A n d S h o o t e r s Hunters, shooters – many individuals that are exposed to loud sounds, know how unpleasant it can be to have to listen to repeated loud noise such as rifle and gunfire whether you find yourself on. Your own or in the company of others while out there in the bush stalking animals or firing salvos during wingshooting activities. The same is true for the competition shooter at the range, or the enthusiast that is practicing his/her skills. Ongoing loud noise is not only unpleasant; it can lead to serious problems such as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) which millions world-wide are suffering from, no matter the extent of their problem. Therefore those that have to listen to unnaturally loud noise all the time whether at work in a factory where you hear machines that never stop or whether you find yourself on the shooting range are well advised to consider the help that is available to them. This help comes in the form of ear plugs that can block out the unpleasant – often harmful – sounds and noise, and the best of these actually offer digitally advanced features that allow pleasant sound through while blocking those very loud sounds from your rifle or gun from causing damage to your hearing. High dB, such as that from the rifle and gunshots may indeed lead to deafness. Research into the effects of loud sounds on the ear goes on. Current findings place normal, acceptable levels of noise and sound way below 100 dB. Consider, for example, that quiet surrounds such as in your garden where peace prevails are shown to be around 20 dB, conversation at 60, traffic noise at around 80. These are levels we live with comfortably. However, from 120, 130 and more, it becomes a real issue, even dangerous. Gun shots, it is estimated, start at around 120 and go up to 130, 150 and more. It therefore goes without saying that exposure to these levels could interfere with hearing.

  2. So it makes sense to look into protective gear such as muffs that offer a certain limited ability to reduce the severity of the loud gunfire and other possibilities such as ear plugs. Initially, when the first aids were introduced, they were quite basic and served as no more than a protective agent to block out sound, any sound at all. Very often these were ear plugs made of, for example, silicone or wax and, although they served – and still do – their purpose, there were certain shortcomings: often irritation in the ear, and of course feeling as if you were deaf because no sounds came through. This, obviously, makes it tough for the hunter for example, that has to know where his prey is, to be aware, or for the shooter at the range that has to listen to instruction or concentrate on what is happening around them. Fortunately, there are now advanced products on the market that have been developed to offer great features whereby the shooter that wears them, can still hear normal sound while those harmful noises caused by loud music or gun fire are eliminated. These digitally advanced ear plugs are designed and manufactured to ensure that the hunter and shooter are aware of sound at normal dB but do not hear those very loud sounds that damage their ears. These devices are manufactured on a custom made basis to fit the ear they are made for since no two ears are the same – not even a person’s right and left ear. Therefore impressions of the ear’s contours are made by an audiologist and molds thereof sent to a company that manufactures these devices, one for each ear. Users have the benefit of a custom made ear plugs that offers them great protection while at the same time not interfering with their ability to hear normal, pleasant sounds. This advancement in technology has enabled many thousands to benefit from ongoing research and offering individuals better ear plugs all the time.
