El colesterol es un componente importante de las membranas celulares y también es la base para la síntesis de ciertas hormonas. • Los fosfolípidos se forman en el hígado y son usados principalmente como bloques de construcción para las membranas celulares, debido a que tienen la capacidad de formar bicapas lipídicas. • Los triglicéridos y el colesterol obtenidos del intestino delgado son ensamblados en la mucosa del intestino en forma de quilomicrones, para luego ser liberados a través del sistema linfático a la circulación.
