  2. What is the Internet? • The Internet is a system of interconnected computer networks that use standard communications protocols.

Before the Internet • The Internet was launched to the public in 1991. • Prior to 1991, people had to physically go the library to perform research. • College students spent hours and hours in the library to find information that we now can find by clicking a few times on the Internet. • Can you imagine actually going to the library?

How to get the Internet ISP • Internet Service Provider • A company who provides access to the Internet • Examples • Companies that provide Wireless services • Phone providers • Cable providers • A Place/Spot that offers Internet wirelessly • Examples • Fast food places • Bookstores • Coffee shops • Some restaurants Hot Spot

  5. Accessing the Internet • Web Browsers • Software applications used to locate and display the Internet • There are many examples of Internet browsers • Each web browser performs the same duties, but different people have a preference regarding which browser to use.

All about the Internet • Double click on your web browser to access the Internet. • Your homepage will automatically appear • The page that automatically comes up when you start your web browser is your homepage. • Once you open the Internet, type your URL address in the address bar. • URL—Uniformed Resource Locator • Example: http://www.unt.edu/ • Your website should now be accessible.

  9. The URL • URL stands for • Uniform Resource Locator • URL is the website address • What do all the letters mean? Domain http:// www.gibborish.org http Type of protocol used to communicate between the browser and the server – this example is hypertext transfer protocol Hostname Name of the server that stores the file/page you are looking at

  10. Extensions • Suffixes at the end of the URL that tell you what type of site you are visiting • .com _____ COMMERCIAL • .edu _____ EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION • .gov _____ GOVERNMENT • .mil _____ MILITARY • .net _____ NETWORK • .org _____ ORGANIZATION

  12. How to Use a Search Engine • When using a search engine, type in keywords. • Keywords are short important words used in search engines. • They narrow down the search. • The results of a search are called hits.

Internet Search Strategies Search Engines • Program that searches the Internet (other websites) for information according to keywords that the user types in. • Provides the user with a list of website links of webpages that contain information about the keywords typed into the search criteria.

  15. Internet Search Strategies • Advanced Search • Using an advanced search on a web browser allows you to filter or narrow down specific choices. • Notice the options available • Exact wording • Unwanted words

  16. Internet Search Strategies • Advanced Search • Words such as: OR, AND, NOT are called BOOLEAN terms • Using those words in an Internet search to limit the search parameters is called a BOOLEANsearch

Let’s Practice Using Search Engines • Open a web browser. • Type your favorite search engine in the address bar. • The search engine should pop up. • In the search bar, type the following: • Cracking knuckles problem • Notice that we did not type in a question…just the keywords. • The lists that appear are called hits. • We will now find out if cracking your knuckles is a problem.

  18. Things to know about the Internet • Websites have underlined links and linked photos called hyperlinks. • Hyperlinks take you to another page on the Internet. • Favorites • Has a star icon and allows you to save your favorite sites

  19. Sending Electronic Information • E-mail • Stands for Electronic Mail • To, From, Date, Subject • Letter or memo content • Attachments • Pictures, files • A way to send a letter or memo instantly through the Internet rather than through the US Postal Service • Send, reply, forward

Sending Electronic Information • E-message boards • Stands for electronic message board • Similar to a bulletin board • Can post text notices for others to see/read • Usually has a main topic for discussion • Others post comments to the main topic and to the other comments that follow • The comments and replies are called a discussion thread

  21. Sending Electronic Information • Online Chat • Area of Internet where you can text message instantly • Chat rooms can have several people at the same time • Several conversations at once can be distracting and difficult to follow • Can open a private chat window with limited participants

Cutting Edge Technology2003-2013 • 2003:TissueReplacement–re-growing damaged bone joints in the body using injectable tissue engineering rather than using surgery and a metal replacement joint. • 2006:Trojan Particles–Injectable clear fluid containing tiny particles that travel through the body to locate cancer cells. They trick the cancer cells into “eating” the particles as food, and then kill them.
