Introduction • Targets: • To cultivate students’ habit of reading newspapers and magazines and to get more tourism information from Internet • To enable students to learn more about Hong Kong’s tourist attractions through conducting research for this project • To enable students to learn more about tourism-related organisations in Hong Kong through site visits

  4. To enable students to understand the origin and history of Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme • To understand the popular tourist attractions ranked by Mainland visitors • To observe the spending pattern of Mainland visitors in Hong Kong • To encourage students to conduct street interviews so as to understand Mainland visitors’ impression of Hong Kong • To enable students to review Hong Kong people’s attitude towards Mainland visitors and then propose to the Government on the right attitude towards visitors so as to groom the development of tourism industry in Hong Kong

To enable students to understand the negative impacts brought by tourism industry • To propose the Government policy on how to maintain the continual development of Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme • To train students to do research works and analyze the information collected • To encourage students to make use of information technology to complete the project

  6. Implementation Plan • To introduce the objectives and concrete implementation plan of this project • Number of lessons required: 2 to 3 periods • Resources required: • Computers • 12 pieces of drawing papers • 12 color pencils • 1 grand prize and 3 small gifts

  7. Lesson Arrangement: • 1. To introduce this project’s concrete implementation plan and rating criteria10 minutes • 2. To use the quizzes of the “Can I help you?” tourism education kit for conducting competition20 minutes

  8. 3.Group Competition: One-day Itinerary Design Competition30 minutes • To make use of information in Section 2 to design the itineraryby regions: New Territories/Kowloon/Hong Kong Island • Or make use of the information in Section 3 to design the itinerary by tourists’ special interests • Free flow of ideas • Design includes the itinerary, description of the tourist attractions, promotional slogan and pamphlets

  9. 4. Report (Champion/1st Runner-up/2nd Runner-up) 20 minutes • 5. Questionnaire Design20 minutes • 6. Manpower allocations for this project and timetable for completing the questionnaire20 minutes

Detailed Arrangements of this Project • Grouping: in a group of 4 students • Job allocation: collect information, design covering page, take photos, write report, design questionnaire, etc. • Introduction of 10 most popular tourist attractions ranked by Mainland visitors • Each group should pay site visits to three of those tourist attractions: to observe and interview with the visitors and staff or owner of the retail shops and take photos (one of the photos must be on the tourist attractions)

Questionnaire Design • Information that must be collected: • The peak seasons of Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme (Golden Week) • History of Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme • History of Tourism Commission • History of the Hong Kong Tourism Board • The data of and details of complaints made by Mainland visitors to Consumer Council*Must collect related articles to support your findings

To identify main routes of Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme; write on three of the main routes and adhere an introduction on the tourist attractions (including information on the attractions and related photos) • Group project on designing one route of journey: List out the objectives of the design, the concrete itinerary (including dining arrangements), prices and promotion pamphlets • The positive impacts brought by Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme on Hong Kong’s economy: transport, retail, food and beverage and hotel sectors

  13. The negative impacts brought by Hong Kong Group Tour Scheme: transport, pollution (acoustic, air, attractions and adjacent environment) • Proposal: • The role played by the Government and a concrete proposal • The right attitude of the trade (travel agents, hotels and retail shops) • The Hong Kong Tourism Board • Hong Kong citizens • Completion Date
