  1. The Most Common Achilles Tear Surgery and How to Avoid It

  2. What is a Achilles Tear? • Achilles tear surgery is a very common injury, with someone suffering from it every 20 seconds. If left untreated, a torn Achilles can result in chronic pain and limit your ability to participate in sports and other activities for an extended period of time. • Achilles tendon tears are most common in teenagers, but the condition can occur at any age. It’s also called Achilles rupture or rupture of the Achilles tendon. • Achilles tendons are the thick, fibrous bands that connect your calf muscles to your Achilles’s steel-encased tendon. Tear-free ruptures of these tendons are very rare, occurring in about 1 in every 100,000 athletes. • It is more commonly called an Achilles tear. Most common reasons for a tear are overuse, overstretching, overvaccination, and genetics. When the tendon is overstretched, the tendon’s collagen becomesurupped, causing part of it to tear away from the tendon’s core. Overvaccination can also cause a tear.

  3. Who Should Have Achilles Tear Surgery? • People who have experienced a complete rupture and have failed to respond to conservative treatment should have a tear repaired. This includes people who have experienced a partial tear or those who are using a steroid. • People who have not experienced a complete tear and are at risk for one should be considered for surgery. • These groups include people with previous unsuccessful or unnecessary surgeries, people with a history of trauma, and young athletes.

  4. Advantages and Disadvantages of Anatomy-Based vs. Technology-Based Treatment • Both surgery and physical therapy have their benefits, but the main advantage of surgery is extensive scar revision. • This scar will help to limit the amount of pain you experience after surgery, as well as provide some protection against future tears. • Physical therapy, on the other hand, is based on prevention. It does not include scar revision, but it will help you to avoid surgery in the future.
