  2. The Battle of Midway, fought in World War II, took place on June 5, 1942 (June 4 in US time zones). The United States Navy defeated a Japanese attack against Midway Atoll, marking a turning point in the war in the Pacific.

  4. Fought just a month after the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway was the turning point of the Pacific Campaign. Skill, daring, and luck all played a part. SHIP

  5. BATTLE OF MIDWAY, a decisive naval battle of World War II that demonstrated that bombers from aircraft carriers, properly utilized, could defeat a superior surface force. This victory by the United States over Japan in June 1942 ended the Japanese advance in the Pacific Ocean.

As an approaching Hellcat veers sharply to get out of the way, a Japanese Zero plummets from thick cloud cover and smashes into the escort carrier Suwannee during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 25, 1944. The Suwannee, one of the first targets of a kamikaze strike, was repaired in two hours.

SBD "Dauntless" dive bombers from USS Hornet (CV-8) approaching the burning Japanese heavy cruiser Mikuma to make the third set of attacks on her, during the early afternoon of 6 June 1942.Mikuma had been hit earlier by strikes from Hornet and USS Enterprise (CV-6), leaving her dead in the water and fatally damaged.
