  1. The Stage Gate Process 2008 Based on Robert Cooper “Perspective: The Stage Gate Idea-to-Launch Process Update, What’s New and Nexgen systems. Journal of Product Innovation Management, May 2008

  2. What is a Stage Gate Process? • A series of Buying options with Due Dilligence • Notice: Three stages Discovery, Scoping, Building the business case before committing large financial outlays in the Development stage. • Stages are design based on information gathered to reduce uncertainty • Later stages more important • Cross departmental cooperation • Cross functional collaboration. No functionally specialized stages (This recommendation should be examined with skepticism in light of the literature on Success and Failure of new products!) • Gates: Deliverables, Criteria, Output

  3. Mistakes in Handling the Stage Gate Process • Not a functional phased Review Process • Not a lock step process • Not a linear system • Not a project control system • Not a dated stagnated system • Not a bureaucratic process • Not a data entry scheme • Not Project Management

  4. Problems and their fixes • Problem with Gates governance • Misapplying cost cutting process to Innovative process • Applying portfolio analysis without a stage gate process • Too much bureaucracy • Too much reliance on software • Putting Insufficient efforts • Not recognizing the insufficiency of the Process

  5. Evolution • Scalability of system to meet risk levels • Flexibility • Simultaneous execution • Adaptable Process • Spiral development • An efficient lean system based on value stream analysis • More effective governance • Accountability: post launch review for improvement • Adaptability to open innovation
