  4. 4 BLOCK SCHEDULING • Our school has adopted a modified version of this type of scheduling to increase students’ success in the area of Language Arts. • Blocks of time are set aside to address 4 different areas. • Guided Reading, Working with Words, Self-Selected Reading (DEAR), and Writing are incorporated in the classroom daily.

  5. LANGUAGE ARTS Literacy Groups Throughout Language Arts, we address the standards through various instructional strategies by incorporating: • Writing • Leveled Readers • Spelling • Grammar • Reading comprehension • Vocabulary

SOCIAL STUDIES • Houghton Mifflin Social Studies: United States History (Civil War to Today) • Tested on GPS (Georgia Performance Standards) this year • This year we will begin with the Civil War and continue to the present. TEAMWORK • ESL-Mrs. Reis • Resource-Mrs. Garner/Mrs. Harrison • EIP Math/Reading-Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Parker • Title 1 Math- Mrs. McIntosh • Speech-Mrs. Alexander • Horizons-Mrs. Case/Mrs. Snook • Guidance-Mrs. O’Neil • They are planning a lot of new and exciting events for the children, and working with the classroom teachers to help students be successful.

  12. CLASSROOM RULES • Be prepared • Follow directions • Work quietly • Respect others- be kind in actions and words • Work and play safely

  13. AGENDAS • Each student should have an agenda to keep track of daily assignments. • The agendas need to be checked daily by parents. • Parents please check these every night to help the students stay on task and learn responsibility.

  14. HOMEWORK • Homework will be assigned in 5th grade daily. • The assignments shouldn’t ever take a student more than one hour total for all subjects. • Late work is discouraged. Guidelines are set by individual teachers regarding late work. • Homework Hotline • Teacher web pages

ACCELERATED READER • Your child will be participating in the Accelerated Reader Program • He/She will be expected to take and pass an appropriate amount of tests per nine weeks with at least 80% accuracy. • Each nine weeks, your child will be given an individual point goal to obtain. • The goal will be based on your child’s reading level which will be received from the STAR test that is given at the beginning of the year. • Some time is set aside weekly for silent reading, but it is very important that your child read each night for at least 20 minutes at home as well.

  16. ATTENDANCE • 7:40 AM-2:20 PM • To be an unexcused absence, a note must be sent in with a parent signature explaining reason. • No bus changes. • Phone calls will not excuse an absence. • If absent, five days will be given for make-up work. • Car rider line will be locked at 7:40A.M. If arriving after that time, student must be checked in at the front office.

  18. IMPORTANT TEST DATES • Georgia Writing Test March 4 • CRCT (Criterion Referenced Competency Test) April 21-29 (Students must meet standards in reading and math in order to be promoted to 6th grade) • Benchmark Assessments: End of each nine week period in Math and Language Arts
