  1. Murray Hill Condos: The Journey Over The Years Today, Murray Hill is a lively neighborhood with a diverse population. Many of its residents are young professionals who work in nearby Midtown offices and can easily walk to their homes. Besides, the area also attracts students attending institutions like the CUNY Graduate Center, the Stern College for Women, and Yeshiva University. Additionally, diplomats who work in the numerous consulates and permanent missions or at the nearby United Nations Headquarters choose to reside here. For commuters, Murray Hill's close proximity to Grand Central Terminal, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, FDR Drive, and the 34th Street heliport is a significant convenience. But these Murray Hill condos for sale weren’t always here. Besides, the place has a history that goes back over two and a half centuries. Murray Hill Since The 1700s The neighborhood got its name from Robert Murray. He was an 18th-century merchant who owned a 25-acre colonial homestead called Belmont, located at Park Avenue and 37th Street. In 1847, Murray's descendants divided the land into smaller lots and established the Murray Hill Restriction, a rule to prevent commercial development in the area. Shortly afterwards, wealthy Manhattan residents moved in, constructing elegant brownstone mansions and carriage houses in this refined part of Midtown. Throughout the mid-20th century, additional rules and community associations were formed to maintain the original residential character and protect its historic structures and landmarks. During the Revolution, Mary, Robert Murray's wife, welcomed British soldiers to their estate for tea, posing as a British loyalist. Her true intent was to buy time for the American army to withdraw from the advancing British troops. After the war, the property returned to the Murray family and remained in their possession until the 1800s. Moreover, the neighborhood didn't witness significant development until the 1800s when a railroad and row houses were constructed in the area.

  2. By the 20th century, it had transformed into a tranquil enclave for the city's elite. Besides, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt resided in the vicinity for some time. However, in the 1990s, a wave of bars, restaurants and other businesses opened their doors here, attracting a growing number of young professionals to the area. A Residential Stronghold The Murray Hill Restriction, as mentioned earlier, had been a steadfast protector of the community. Despite numerous legal challenges that reached the highest courts, it remained intact with only a few exceptions. Yet, the Murray descendants couldn't have anticipated the emergence of a new kind of residence—the apartment building. That was just the beginning! The luxurious Murray Hill condos still had years before they were anywhere in sight or for sale. In an effort to fortify their position against the encroachment of high-rise structures, the Murray Hill Association was founded in 1914. Besides, the original board members included notable figures such as: ●J. Pierpont Morgan ●William Church Osborn ●Herbert Parsons ●Warren Delano ●George R. Sheldon ●William D. Guthrie ●Temple Bowdoin. By 1920, the late Charles T. Barney's former residence underwent a transformation into a fifteen- story apartment building. Situated at the northeast corner of Park Avenue and 38th Street, this was the first multi-family dwelling. The Judge Russell house, at the southeast corner of Park Avenue and 37th Street, followed suit in 1922 when it came under the ownership of cooperative apartment developers. Regardless of the influential members, the Murray Hill Association couldn't halt the expansion of apartment buildings along the neighborhood's avenues. Moreover, it effectively continued to employ the 1847 Restriction to thwart full-scale commercial conversions. This also blocked the widespread demolition of facilities or the amalgamation of lots for the construction of large office complexes. Back To The Present: Murray Hill Condos, Schools, And More
