  3. Nicotine is a poison • Affects the CNS and brain; stimulates and relaxes • Increases heart beat and causes heart disease • Raises blood pressure • Stomach ulcers • Stomach cancer • Lung disease

  4. Effects of smoking…

  5. Tar contains carcinogens • Mouth, lips, throat and lung cancer • Smoker's cough • Emphysema • Bronchitis • Pneumonia

  6. Another chemical in cigarette smoke – Carbon Monoxide • Combines with haemoglobin more easily than oxygen, reducing the body's capacity to carry oxygen • Fatty deposits in arteries • Heart attack or stroke • Gangrene

  8. Alcohol – short term effects • Lowers inhibition and creates feeling of wellbeing • First stimulates, then depresses • Slowed brain and muscular activity • Slowed thinking and reaction time • Impaired judgement of time and distance (why it is so dangerous to drink and drive!)

  9. Alcohol – long term effects • Dependency and addiction • Memory loss • Stomach disorders • Damage to the liver (cirrhosis), heart and other organs • Weight gain • Heart problems • Brain damage • Unconsciousness and even death
