  1. Physical Therapy Approach For Treating Ankle Pain ***************************************** Specific injuries or fractures can cause ankle pain. It can severely limit your ability to perform essential functions such as running or walking. The painful activity can lower the strength of your lower extremity, restricting your range of motion. It has a significant effect on the performance of your daily activities. Physical therapy can be beneficial in treating your ankle injury or broken ankle. It can help you fully recover from ankle pain, allowing you to return to your previous range of motion. Common Causes of Ankle Pain Ankle pain can be a result of several injuries or conditions. The most common causes of ankle pain are as follows: •Bursitis - Fluid-filled sacs, known as bursae, cushion your bones when they move. Bursitis usually happens when the sacs become irritated and inflamed. •Fractures - An incident can cause the breaking down of the bones or cause a fracture. Ankle fractures can be mild and also can go severe. Broken ankles can lead to the involvement of bones in any part of the ankle joint. A fractured ankle can lead to pain and swelling in the ankle. •Sprains - Sprained ankles are some of the common causes of ankle pain. Sprained or twisted ankles can occur when the ankles roll forcefully out of the normal position. An ankle sprain can be caused due to wearing or tearing of the ligaments. IMG Physical Therapy

  2. •Tendonitis - Irritated or inflamed tendons are some of the soft tissues called tendonitis. Tendonitis helps in connecting the muscles to the bones. There can also be tearing of the tendonitis, such as Achilles tendon rupture. If a tendon gets torn, it may require surgery to repair it. •Arthritis - Pain or stiffness in your ankle can also result from arthritis. Arthritis usually happens with the breaking down of your cartilage. The breakdown leads to the bones rubbing together. Injuries or overuse can lead to arthritis. It is most commonly found in people above the age of 65 years. Two common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis. Physical Therapy For Ankle Pain After reducing or immobilizing your fracture, a doctor usually refers you to a physical therapist to learn how an assistive device like crutches, a cane, or a walker can be used for your ankle repair. The certified physical therapist for ankle pain relief can help you understand your weight-bearing restrictions. Some gentle exercises for your knees and hips can be performed to ensure that the muscles that help you to walk do not weaken while healing your ankles. If you have a fracture, then the healthcare professional can apply a cast to get it healed. After recovering your ankle, the healthcare provider would remove the cast and thus allow you to bear more weight. However, your therapist may suggest you have special restrictions for bearing body weight. You must ask your therapist how much weight you can put on your ankles and the limits you need to follow.
