In humans, monkeypox causes fever, headache, muscle aches, and painful sores on the skin.
Monkey Pox Outbreak: What You Need to Know About the Deadly Disease

Monkeypox is caused by a virus that infects monkeys and people. It was first identified in 1958 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The disease has been reported in many countries, including the United States.
MONKEY Pox Causes
Monkeypox is not contagious between people, but it can spread easily among animals. People who come into close contact with infected animals are at high risk of contracting the disease.
The virus causes fever, headache, muscle aches, and skin rash. If left untreated, monkeypox can be fatal.
The disease has been known to cause death in people who have weakened immune systems.
Monkeypox is one of several diseases called zoonotic diseases because they are passed between animals and people. Other examples include rabies, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus.
In humans, monkeypox causes fever, headache, muscle aches, and painful sores. These symptoms usually appear two weeks after exposure to the virus. However, some patients develop pneumonia or encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain).
Symptoms
Monkeypox is caused by a virus called variola major. It spreads through close contact with infected animals, such as monkeys, rodents, bats, and prairie dogs. People who come into contact with these animals are at risk of contracting the disease.
Treatment
There are no vaccines available for monkeypox, so prevention is key. If you think you might have been exposed to monkeypox, call your doctor immediately. They will likely prescribe antibiotics to treat symptoms and prevent complications.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by a virus called variola major. The virus is spread from animals to humans via close contact with infected animals. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes skin rashes. Complications can include pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and death.
Prevention
The disease is rare in humans, but it can be deadly. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 1970 and 1979, there were at least 1,000 cases of monkeypox reported in the United States. Between 1980 and 2000, there were fewer than 10 cases per year. However, since 2001, there has been a steady increase in the number of cases reported each year. As of 2014, there have been nearly 300 cases of monkeypox reported nationwide.
Monkeypox is not contagious among people. However, it can spread through contact with infected animals. People who come in close contact with an animal that has monkeypox should take precautions to avoid being exposed to the virus.
In May 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported two monkeypox cases in the United States. Both patients had recently returned from travel to West Africa. One patient had visited Liberia and Sierra Leone, while the other had visited Nigeria.
