  1. Columbia Center for Electron Transport in Molecular Nanostructures. James T. Yardley Electrical Engineering Columbia University

  2. Columbia Center for Electron Transport in Molecular Nanostructures. 2001-2011 Vsd Source Drain Insulator Gate Vg Impacts for Science and Technology  Single-molecule electronic transport.  Graphene exposition.  Carbon Electronics: graphene and carbon nanotubes.  Carbon nanostructure spectroscopy and electron dynamics. • Electronics beyond Silicon and CMOS. • Energy: Nanoscale electron transport. Broader Impacts. • New paradigms for university research. • New paradigms for university – business and government interaction. • New paradigms for integral societal and scientific research. • New generation of students experienced in interdisciplinary and collaborative research. • Diverse and diversity-sensitive "workforce". •  Education on Nanoscale Science and Technology at all levels including the general public. • New generation of scientific leaders. • Enhanced diversity in all levels of science and technology.

  3. Energy • Water • Food • Environment • Poverty • Terrorism and War • Disease • Education • Democracy • Population 10 most important issues facing society: Somehow within the next few decades we must find a new energy source that can provide at least 10 terawatts (TW) of clean power on sustainable basis, and do this cheaply. Where is that 10-50 TW of new power going to come from? Who will make the necessary scientific and engineering breakthroughs? Can it be cheap enough to bring 10 billion people to a reasonable standard of living? Can it be done soon enough to avoid the hard economic times, terrorism, war and human suffering that will otherwise occur? Energy may very well be the single most critical challenge facing humanity in this century. NSEC provides basis for the type and style of research envisioned by Richard Smalley!

  4. Maintaining the Network after 10 Years. Issue: Continuation of NSEC Program and in What Form? • New NSEC Programs. • NSEC Network….analog to NNIN. • Could be topical…ie electronics, bio/med, materials, etc. • Could emphasize new faculty and exploratory science.
