While the core function of a POS system stays the same, namely transaction processing, technology has evolved to accommodate the changing needs of the restaurant business. This post will examine how POS systems for restaurants have changed from traditional cash registers, to more cloud- based options. Cash Registers Before the advent of POS Systems, restaurants used mechanical cash registers to process transactions. Cash Registers These registers were limited in functionality, and the customer had to enter every item manually. These cash registers were unable to compile statistics or track stock. Cash Registers, Electronic Electronic cash registers, which featured more advanced capabilities such as barcode scanning, receipt printing, and basic inventory management, were launched in the 1980s. These systems were limited in their capabilities and could not be integrated with any other systems. POS Systems of the Past Legacy POS (Point of Sale) systems, developed in 1990, included features such as employee scheduling and inventory tracking. The systems used were expensive, complicated to set up, and required on-site servers. Cloud-Based Point-of-Sale Systems Cloud-based POS are increasingly in demand by restaurant owners today.
