  1. AWARENESS PROGRAM ON METER & HOUSE WIRING

  2. What is Electricity Meter A device to record Energy consumption.

  3. Meter Terminology • No load Test • Starting Current • Current Range • Influence parameters

  4. Meter Type v/s Recording • If Load is 2 AC, 1 Geyser, 1 Fridge, 1 TV, 20 bulb • Current ……………… 38 Amp • Sr. No Rating Recording 1.0 2.5~5A ( Mech.) Read 15% 2.0 5A~10A ( Mech.) Read 26% 3.0 5A~20A (mech.) Read 53% 4.0 10~40A(Mech.) Read Okay 5.0 10~60A ( Elect.) Read Okay

  5. BSES Electronic Meters • Specification • Rating 10~60A • Starting 0.2% • Kwh and MD in KW • TOD, 6 Tariff and 6 time zone • 6 Month Billing data • RS232C • Transformer supply

  6. FAQ • Why Mechanical meter Read less • Influence Parameters • Age • Wear and Tear • Narrow Range • Mounting • Dust and Oil effect • Mechanical Counters

  7. FAQ • Why electronic meter are preferred • Wide Range • Low starting current • Less effect of Influence parameters • More accurate • Temper proof

  8. ROLE OF LED N-CUT CAL LED EL REV LED

  9. ROLE OF LED CAL LED High resolution Out Put devices for Meter checking

  10. ROLE OF LED REV LED • * Indicate Reverse flow of • Energy • Reason • * Wrong wiring • * Use of un isolated • Generator/ Inverters

  11. ROLE OF LED EL • Due to Unbalance Current. • Need Attention

  12. ROLE OF LED N- Cut • Indicate Current without • Voltage on Meter • Contact DISCOM • immediately

  13. KNOW ABOUT EL The glowing of the EL LED indicates the following: Earth is being used as neutral. Neutral is touching the earth. Phase / Neutral wire is touching with the neighbors phase / Neutral wire. Neutral wire is interconnected with the neighbors neutral wire.

  14. KNOW ABOUT EL • Wrong wiring, among others things can result in: • Safety hazards (wires are still live, even when the main switch is off). • Cause fire (if by mistake phase and neutral wires get interchanged) • Wrong Current flow (the neighbours current can flow through your meter)

  15. Good electronic meters have Current sensorsinboththe Phase path, and Neutral path For Measurement it choose higher*of the two current. * In general Phase current is used for measurement however if neutral Current more by 10~ 12 % then Neutral current selected

  16. Electro-mechanical Meter has Current sensoronly on one wire All Measurement based on phase wire current even when connected to neutral.

  17. Good electronic meters have Current sensorsinboththe Phase path, and Neutral path This is an advantage of electronic meters over electromechanical meters Never buy electronic meters without this feature But neutral looping may cause the meter to “run Extra”

  18. KNOW ABOUT EL If EL ON, get your internal wiring checked for any leakages and other problems and also carefully look at the EL LED in the Electronic Meters. EL LED, in Electronic Meters, however small, is of great importance and consumers are advised not to ignore its usefulness.

  19. HOUSE DISTRIBUTION BOX METER MCB / Switch Fuse Phase Neutral D. Box

  20. NORMAL CONNECTION I red = I yellow E mech= Eelect

  21. NORMAL CONNECTION I red < I yellow E mech< Eelect JUMPER

  22. INPUT PHASE / NEUTRAL INTERCHANGE I red = I yellow E mech= Eelect NO EFFECT NO EFFECT

  23. NEUTRAL TOUCHING TO EARTH I white <I red (EL on) Electronic = I red Mechanical = I red EL glow E mech= Eelect NO EFFECT

  24. INTERCHANGE LINE & NEUTRAL EARTH SHIFTING EL glow I red>I white (EL on) Electronic = I red Mechanical = I white Mechanical read less

  25. INTERCHANGE LINE & NEUTRAL EARTH SHIFTING I white = 0 EL glow I red>I white (EL on) Electronic = I red Mechanical = Nil Mechanical read Nil

  26. ELECTRONIC METER RECORD CORRECTLY No Effect

  27. COMMON NEUTRAL Meter Recording As per Neutral Current (Extra) As per Phase current (okay)

  28. COMMON NEUTRAL 15A 15A 15A (15+5) A 15A 5A 15A 15A 15A 10A

  29. COMMON NEUTRAL 15A 15A 15A 14.5A 15A 0.5A 15A 15A 15A (15+0.5) A

  30. COMMON NEUTRAL 15A 15A 15A 10A 15A 5A 15A 15A 15A (15+5) A

  31. INTERCONNECTED NEUTRAL

  32. Wiring Defect Type Of Defects • Distribution Box • Wiring

  33. Distribution Box • Use of DP- MCB/ Isolator. • Ensure ELCB. • For more than 10 Amp ckts. • Separate MCB. • Neutral Bus-bar. • Correct fuse & wire size.

  34. ELCB FUSE MCB Proper Installation

  35. Wiring Defect • Earth (No Neutral) • N-E • Common N • Common P • Combination

  36. Wiring Defect Tools • Clamp on tester • Bulb tester • Line tester • Electrician Kit.

  37. Clamp on tester

  38. HOUSE DISTRIBUTION BOX METER MCB / Switch Fuse Phase Neutral D. Box GLOW

  39. HOUSE DISTRIBUTION BOX METER MCB / Switch Fuse Phase Neutral D. Box GLOW

  40. Wiring Defect Step-1. If no. of Meter in one Premise is only one then there is no common Neutral problem.

  41. Step-2. Load On Check I phase & I neutral If I neutral = 0 Earth is used. METER Phase 10A Neutral 0A EARTH Common Neutral EL NE

  42. Step-3. If Neutral remove from MCB still load working than wiring problem. If total MCB Off and still load working, then both wire sharing.

  43. Step-4. At MCB If Phase Off, then EL Off Means Neutral-Earth Problem. Step-5. If neighbour Phase Off Then EL Off , Means Common wire.

  44. Phase Neutral EARTH Phase Neutral EARTH

  45. Step-6. If V EN≠ 0 Then Earth not touching Neutral Step-7. If common wire Disconnect one by one Neutral Ckt. From Bus-bar & see if EL off.

  46. Step-8. Once Ckt. Identified then repair The defect. Step-9. Once again check all current. i.e. Ip = In

  47. HOUSE DISTRIBUTION BOX METER MCB / Switch Fuse Phase Neutral D. Box GLOW

  48. Typical Defect Pts. Common Load. E.g. Motor Stair Case Light (i.e. two way switch. Common Invertors /Generator. Houses with separate power & light meter.

  49. Typical Pts. Where Earth gets common with neutral Metallic body Appliances. Appliances connected with metal pipe line. Building RCC.

  50. !!Beware!! Meter can only be touch by Discom (BSES) employee.
