  1. Managing Work Stress Through Counselling The adage of the modern world that “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy” is simply not true and does not hold up. It is far too common that we see people overworking themselves to the point of exhaustion, working excessively long hours, and taking little to no leave. These people are usually rewarded by their employer in some or another way, but what they’re gaining in one area, they’re lacking in another. It has been proven time and time again that overworking someone causes excessive stress to that person and can do a lot of harm in the long run. It may not be all that noticeable at first, but forcing yourself to work more than you allow yourself to relax can have detrimental effects on your mental well-being. It is as important to take a holiday as it is to work hard and show dedication to your career. All jobs and all types of careers will involve some sort of stress and it is to be expected that you will be stressed from time to time in the working world. However, this normal pressure and stress should not negatively affect your mental health, but, when it starts to increase to an inordinate amount of pressure on one person, particularly if it is over an extended period, then this stress can start to take its toll. The one thing that most people don’t understand is that technology is largely to blame for the stress of careers impacting people to such an extent. Although technology is a wonderful tool, it is also the reason why so few people can switch off after their workday and simply relax and spend worry-free time with their friends or loved ones. Having a cell phone that constantly beeps or flashes your emails at you, or a boss that can instant message you at all hours of the day causes your brain to be in work mode all of the time. Even if you don’t tend to the email or answer the call, the very fact that you’ve seen it will plant a little stress seed in your brain and it will be all the more difficult to fully allow yourself to relax. Work stress can manifest in your life in various ways. Some people have reported trouble sleeping or physical aches and pains that they believe to have a different source. Therapists or doctors have since come to recognise a lot of these types of signs as indicators of someone being overworked and very stressed at their job. A therapist or counsellor is one of the very best tools available for someone who is struggling with work-related stress. A therapist will be able to pinpoint the source of stress in your life and they will also be able to offer insight and advice as to how best to manage your work stress without it affecting your work ethic. Many people believe that they have to give 110% at work for fear of losing their job should they not be available at all hours or take their allotted leave days. What is most important to understand is that to be a functional and valuable employee, you need to be able to manage your stress, and here is where a professional counsellor or therapist will be able to help. A counsellor will be able to help you balance your work and personal life so that you minimise stress and keep up your good performance at work so that you can have the best of both worlds. It is not necessary to work yourself to death it may be incredibly detrimental to try burning the candle at both ends. It is far better to speak to someone that understands this type of stress to allow yourself better balance and understanding in your life.
