  2. MIDDLE EAR INFECTIONS MAY BE CLASSIFIED INTO THE FOLLOWING: • Acute otitis media • Otitis media with effusion • Chronic otitis media with effusion

  3. 1. ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA This type of infection generally occurs all of a sudden. Symptoms may include redness and swelling. The causes of acute otitis media are the mucus and fluid that is trapped in the middle ear. It might even cause ear pain and fever as well.

  4. 2. OTITIS MEDIA WITH EFFUSION After the infection is cured, mucus and fluid might still build up inside the middle ear and can cause otitis media with effusion. If this continues for months then it can harm your ability to hear.

  5. 3. CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA WITH EFFUSION When the mucus and the fluid continue to stay behind the eardrum for a longer period of time then it can cause chronic otitis media. Such conditions are often quite difficult to treat. Just like the otitis media with effusion, it can harm your ability to hear.
