  2. Prepositionalphrases • What is a preposition? It is a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the sentence. Can younamesomecommonprepositions?

  3. What is a phrase? - It’s a small group of words standing together as a conceptual unit, typically forming a component of a clause. - A phrase is a group of words that acts in a sentence as a single part of speech.

  4. What is a prepositionalphrase? • Prepositional phrases are groups of words containingprepositions. • A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and usually ends with a noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition.

  5. Examples: • I voted against the idea. • [Idea is the object of the preposition against.]

  6. Examples: • The elevator is necessary for us. • [Usis the object of the preposition for.]

  7. Types of prepositional phrases Prepositional phrases modify nouns and verbs while indicating various relationships between subjects and verb. • - Adverbial or adverb prepositional phrase. • - Adjectival or adjective prepositional phrase.

  10. In the case of prepositional phrases, the adjective will answer the questions: • which one, • what kind • how many/much” • Joe is the student with the highest grades. ("with the highest grade.”) and it also modifies the noun “student.")

  11. On the other hand, the adverb one will answer the questions: “how, when. why or where, to what extend.” • how, • when • whyorwhere • towhatextend • Megan put her bird in its cage. Thisprepositionalphraseisanadverbphrasebecauseitanswers “where” sheputthebird. (Also"in its cage" modifies the verb "put.“)

  17. Tips to findadjectiveoradverbprep. prhases Remember to check the word before the preposition. Usually, adjective prepositional phrases are after a noun, and before adverb prepositional phrases there is a verb that is being modified. Examples: - She gave a surprise birthday party to her mother. - Emerson moved to his new apartment last month.

  18. Another tip is to find the preposition first, it can be at the beginning, in the middle or at the end. - The discussion is between you and I, so stay there! - After this long vacation, my husband will return the car. - She was happily married to Mr. Simpson.

Verbals and Verbal Phrases • A verbal is a verb form that functions in a sentence as a noun, an adjective or an adverb. • A verb phrase is a verbal plus any complements and modifiers. • The three kinds of verbals are Participles, gerunds and infinitives. All of these types can be expanded into phrases.

  20. Practice: • 1- Sweaters crafted by Irish workers are heavy and durable. • 2- Shoppers can find interesting fashions from just about anywhere in the world. • 3- India exports gold hoops for pierced ears.

  21. Examples: • For centuries, the Yanomamo have lived by raising crops, gathering fruits and nuts, and hunting. • Mining and ranching have begun to intrude on the lands of the Yanomamo.
