Naked Men Cause a Stir with Museum's New Exhibit Artwork Of http://salikner.am/user/MossStark1/ Gets Censored Naked Men - An article recently came out in the Wall Street Journal, Why Naked Men Get Short Shrift and started off with the question, Why does the male naked get no respect? Really. The article came out because of a brand new display in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, Austria called Naked Men. Well now, aren't they merely asking for trouble with a name like that? The museum promoted the display by putting up posters around the city of three man soccer players, naked aside from their knee high socks and cleats. It was not long before they were met with a surge of complaints about the male nudity. Let's face it: the sight of naked guys upsets peopleeven in Europe! And this was a poster. Picture if it were live men, like in San Francisco. The museum had posted pictures of full-frontal female nudity without difficulty, so this backlash was purportedly unanticipated. The WSJ reported, Some are complaining the images remind them of sex or sexually traumatic encounters. Wait, reminded them of sex? They are genitals. And I am fully sympathetic with individuals who have endured sexual abuse or trauma but however, I do think it's a pretty extreme reaction. Naked Men Uncensored version of "Vive La France" by Pierre and Gilles, featured on a poster to encourage the new "Naked Men" exhibit at the Leopold Museum Yet this opinion from another report is more revealing (no pun meant): Museum officials say they received a deluge of criticisms by last week, mostly from outlying districts heavily populated by new immigrants from http://www.expressrecapiti.it/index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&task=user&id=160208 . This is why they're also quoted on saying the intolerance toward male nudity is partially spiritual based. But is that any reason to give in and censor the posters? Must they appease http://www.blic-tur.ua/index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&task=user&id=276524 who don't want to see male genitals on a poster because of their religious beliefs? Female bare art by Gustav Klimt, supposedly http://liport.ru/user/TranAcosta7/ in Vienna right now. But no troubles with this one! In my opinion, the museum shouldn't have capitulated and covered the genitals in red tape! Austria is not a Muslim country, and this is artwork together with freedom of expression. Why not let folks whine or protest? It is only depicting the body included in an art exhibit. By covering it up, the museum is really saying that the complaints were warranted. It is also sending a sign the body or genitals are obscene, always pornographic, shameful, improper, awful, and every other negative adjective it is possible to think of. In my own world view, the dick isn't any more obscene compared to the elbow. Since the museum had previously posted images of naked girls without any backlash, are they saying the vagina is alright but the member is poor? Inside my book, that is a double standard since a naked body is a nude body. The red tape is, in addition, marring the original artwork which will be a smack in the face to the artist who created it. I believe it is time for individuals to protest the censorship! Here is only a little note I prepared that individuals can just copy and paste (but personalize) and e-mail to the curator of the display at [email protected]: - Dear Tobias Natter, It's been called to my attention which you determined to cave to public pressure and are actually covering up the posters for your own exhibit "Naked Men". If that is accurate then I find it personally upsetting and offensive. This can be an art display - Would you cover Michelangelo's David if enough people complained? Since you'd previously posted posters of naked females, are you currently trying to say that a naked guy is something that is black? I cannot in good faith support such policies and would like you to e-mail me back explaining your actions. Please note, that public opinion and pressure is not reason for this activity. Truly, - Is there anything healthy in consistently censoring the human body? Telling everyone, adults and kids, that there is something wrong with that part of our bodies? They're simply perpetuating the notion of body shame; a part of American, and I think Austrian, culture that's dangerous and time to do away with. By capitulating, and censoring the nudity, the museum recognizes that there surely is a problem with nudity and the naked human form is black and should be covered up. The WSJ piece tells stories of when art featuring male nudes was censored by the Catholic Church or society. Centuries later, we still censoring them - Does that seem reasonable to you? What would you believe? Should the museum have left the Naked Men posters uncovered? Or were they right when they decided to cover them up?
