    1. SWA Steering Committee Meeting 20/21 November 2010 – Addis Ababa GLAAS and SWA: Using the data and the road to 2012

    3. 28 African countries out of 42 total participating countries were reported in 2010 GLAAS

    4. Africa faces challenges in meeting MDG target for sanitation and drinking-water

    5. Many primary schools lack adequate sanitation and hygiene

    6. Percent of deaths attributable to sanitation, hygiene, and water-related disease or injury

    7. Over 1.7 million deaths in Africa are attributable to sanitation, hygiene, and water-related disease or injury

    8. Aid for water and sanitation to sub-Saharan Africa has increased relative to Northern Africa

    9. Aid targeting…21% of sanitation and water ODA spent on basic services in Africa

    10. While aid for sanitation and water has increased to Africa, aid for basic systems has remained relatively constant

    11. US$ 2.8 billion in average annual aid for sanitation and drinking-water in Africa is 58% grants and 42% loans

    12. Countries report that financing is inadequate to meet MDG target

    13. Sanitation investment plans lag behind drinking-water

    14. Absorption of aid in African GLAAS countries is better than in non-African GLAAS countries

    15. Institutional roles are less well defined in Africa than in rest of the world

    16. Data on human resources capacity and needs are limited

    17. Stakeholder participation seems weaker in Africa than elsewhere

    18. Equitability criteria for allocating funds are less common in African GLAAS countries

    19. 63% of the African countries have more than ten donors in sanitation and drinking-water

    20.
